Are They Not In Your Book

The folder is green and it is the kind with the elastic corners, and she has had it since two thousand and seventeen and it is full.

Every application. Every covering letter. And, printed out, which is the part that would worry anybody who saw it, every refusal.

She would explain, if you asked, that she keeps them for the feedback. Some of them do have feedback. Most of them are four lines and one of them is a template so old it still has a different logo on it.

Nine years. Forty one applications, because there is a page at the front where she has numbered them, which she started doing in year three and has never stopped.

She is forty seven. She is in a meeting room at a community center on a Thursday afternoon, ten minutes early for something she has agreed to help with, and the folder is in her bag because she went to the library on the way and did another one.

And she took it out and put it on the table and did not open it, and sat there with the light coming through the blinds in those stripes it does, and thought a thing she has thought maybe a thousand times and never said.

Nobody has ever seen this.

Not the folder. The nine years. Forty one times she has sat down and made a case for herself, carefully, in her best language, and sent it into a building, and forty one times something has come back or nothing has come back, and every single one of those has been absorbed alone in a kitchen and never mentioned to a living soul.

The green folder is the only witness there is, and it is a witness she keeps in a bag.

She has never once believed any of it was noticed. Not by a person, and, if she is honest, and in a striped meeting room on a Thursday she is, not by God either.

You have a folder. It might be applications. It might be treatments, or letters, or attempts at a reconciliation, or years of turning up. And you have absorbed every one of them by yourself, and somewhere along the line you concluded that unwitnessed means unnoticed. There is a psalm that goes at exactly that conclusion, and it is stranger and more physical than people expect.

He keeps them in a bottle

I have to be careful here, and more careful than usual, because there is a version of this that arrives with a forecast. Number forty two is the one. God is lining something up. Your breakthrough is at the door. I am not going to say any of that. Nobody who talks to you about God has been authorized to schedule an outcome, and a forecast that does not land will cost her more than the nine years have.

Here is what Scripture does say, and it is not a forecast, it is a filing system.

David, on the run, writes: Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book? (Psalm 56:8).

Three things in one verse and every one of them is an act of record keeping. Thou tellest my wanderings, which means He counts them, one at a time. Put my tears into thy bottle, which is a physical image of something being collected and kept rather than evaporating. And then the question at the end, which is not anxious. Are they not in thy book. He asks it the way you ask a thing you already know.

You have a record kept by somebody who was in the kitchen for all forty one of them. That is not a comforting gloss; Psalm 56:8 names the counting, the keeping and the book in one line, and the Holy Spirit who inspired it chose three separate images because one was not enough.

And notice what is being kept. Not the achievements. The wanderings and the tears. The psalm files the unproductive parts, deliberately, as the things worth collecting.

Unwitnessed is not unnoticed

Now the conclusion that has actually been running for nine years.

She never decided that God was not watching. She inferred it, from the silence, in a kitchen, forty one times, and an inference made forty one times without anybody present to object becomes a settled fact about the universe.

You were never unobserved in a single one of those forty one evenings. Psalm 139:2 says He understands your thought from far off and is acquainted with all your ways, and acquainted is a relational word rather than a surveillance one; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) has been at every kitchen table where an envelope was opened.

This is yours right now, with a green folder closed on a table: an account kept in a place you did not know existed. Malachi 3:16 says a book of remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the Lord and thought upon His name, and the book exists whether or not anybody in the room is aware of it; the Spirit who inspired that line has been writing while she has been numbering pages.

What she is actually afraid of

Let me name the sentence under nine years, because it is not disappointment about jobs.

It sounds like this: if nobody saw any of it, then the nine years happened to nobody, and I am not sure I am here. That is the fear, and it is more existential than the situation looks from outside, and she has never said any of it out loud, because it would sound dramatic and she is not a dramatic person.

You were seen through every one of those nine years and the seeing did not need a witness in the room. Genesis 16:13 has Hagar, alone in a desert after being sent away, calling God the one who sees me, and she is the first person in Scripture to give God a name; the Holy Spirit who preserved that scene put it in a place where there was nobody else at all.

Fruit is not output, and a green folder is where the difference is plainest. Output is what came of the forty one, and the honest answer is nothing that could be shown. Fruit is what grew on a woman who sat down and made a case for herself forty one times after forty times of nothing, and Galatians 5:22 calls part of that longsuffering, and it does not go in a folder and would not fit.

And I am not going to tell you the next one lands. I do not know. What can be said, and only this, is that the tears went into a bottle and the wanderings were counted, and neither of those depended on anybody in the building noticing.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. On the walk to the library you already take, tell Him about one of those evenings with no request attached to it. Not the next application. One evening. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody scores that.
