He Sent Bread and Did Not Explain

He calls it the empty one, and he means a specific year, and if you press him he will give you the year by its number.

He was thirty four. Nothing dramatic happened, which is part of what he cannot get past. Nobody died. He did not lose anything you could photograph. He simply stopped, in a way he still cannot describe, and he slept.

Ten, eleven hours, and then a couch in the afternoon. He got up and did the minimum and went back. He kept his job by about a hand's width. He remembers the pattern on the couch cushion better than he remembers anything else about that year, which he has never told anybody, because it sounds like a joke and it is not.

He came out of it. That happens too, and it happened the same way it went in, quietly, over months, and by the following autumn he was mostly a person again.

He is thirty nine now, five years on, and here is the thing that has not moved in five years: he is waiting to be told what it was for.

He would not put it like that in company. In company he says he had a rough patch. But there is a sentence sitting under his life and it goes: as soon as I know what that year was about, I will be able to put it down. And he has been reading, and listening, and half attending to sermons for the sentence that will finally land on it, and it has not come, and after five years the not coming has started to feel like an answer of its own, and the answer feels like: you wasted it and there is nothing to tell you.

He is at the kitchen table on a Saturday morning with a coffee going cold and the light coming in the way it does, and he has just caught himself doing it again, waiting, the way you catch yourself checking a phone you already checked.

You have that year, or that stretch. And you may not be waiting for the same thing, but you are waiting to be told, and the not being told has begun to look like a verdict. There is a passage in Kings where a man collapses under a tree, and what God does about it is one of the least explained things in the whole Bible, and that is the point of it.

The angel did not give a reason

I have to be careful here, more careful than usual, because there is a version of this that arrives with the explanation. That year was preparation. God was doing something in the roots. It was the winter before something. I am not going to say any of it. Scripture does not explain his year, and inventing a reason and putting God's name on it is exactly the thing he has been waiting for somebody to do, and it would not hold.

Elijah, after the greatest public moment of his life, walks a day into the wilderness, sits down under a juniper tree and asks to die. He says: It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life (1 Kings 19:4). And then he lies down and sleeps.

And here is what God does. Not a rebuke, and not a lecture about how the fire had just fallen. An angel touches him and says arise and eat, and there is a cake baked on the coals and a jar of water. He eats and lies down again. And the angel comes back a second time, and touches him again, and says: Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee (1 Kings 19:7).

That is the whole intervention. Food, sleep, food again, and one observation about the length of the road. There is not one word of explanation anywhere in it.

You have been fed through a year nobody explained to you. That is not me softening the passage; 1 Kings 19:7 gives the reason for the food as the size of the journey and gives no reason at all for the collapse, and the Holy Spirit who preserved that scene left the silence in.

And notice what is not there. There is no question about how a prophet ended up in this state. There is no instruction until he has slept twice and eaten twice. God treats a man's exhaustion as a fact to be met rather than a problem to be interpreted.

And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.1 Kings 19:7

Waiting for the meaning is its own year

Now the thing that has actually been happening for five years, which is not the year itself.

He has spent five years in a waiting room. It has been more expensive than the year was. The year took twelve months and the waiting has taken five, and the waiting has a particular cruelty in it, which is that every sermon that does not land on it and every book that does not explain it quietly adds to the case against him.

You have never been under an obligation to extract a meaning from that year. Deuteronomy 29:29 says the secret things belong unto the Lord our God, and it says that as a settled arrangement rather than as a disappointment; the Spirit who inspired that line was drawing a boundary that a person is allowed to stand behind.

This is yours right now, at a kitchen table on a Saturday: permission to stop waiting for a sentence that was never promised. Isaiah 55:9 says His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts than our thoughts, and higher does not mean withheld out of spite; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) is not running a test you failed to pass.

What he is actually afraid of

Let me name the sentence under five years of waiting, because it is not curiosity.

It sounds like this: if there is no meaning in it, then I lost a year of my life for nothing, and the only thing that would make it survivable is if it turns out to have been useful. That is the fear, and it is completely understandable, and it has never once been said out loud in that house.

You were kept through the whole of that year and the keeping did not depend on it being useful. Psalm 121:4 says He that keepeth thee will not slumber, and the sentence is about His attention rather than your productivity; the Holy Spirit who inspired that psalm was in a room with a couch and a pattern on a cushion.

Fruit is not output, and a lost year is exactly where the distinction bites. Output is what could be shown for that year, and there is nothing, and he will tell you so before you ask. Fruit is what grew on a man who got up and did the minimum for twelve months when getting up was the whole of what he had, and Galatians 5:22 calls part of that longsuffering, and it never once looked like anything.

And I am not going to tell you your year was for something. I do not know. What can be said, and only this, is that a man in Scripture was met in that condition with food and sleep and no explanation, and that the meeting was the point rather than the meaning.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. While the kettle does what it does anyway, tell Him about one ordinary afternoon out of that year. Not the worst one. An ordinary one. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody asks that for a lesson.
