Awake at Three Fifty Every Morning

This message is for a woman of forty one who wakes at three fifty every morning with her chest going, who has tried every technique there is, and who cannot make peace happen no matter what she does

It is not three. It is not four. It is three fifty, and it has been three fifty for two years and four months, and the consistency of it is one of the more unpleasant things about it.

She wakes with her chest already going. That is the order, and it took her a long time to work out and even longer to say out loud: the physical thing arrives first, and then her mind, arriving second and finding the room on fire, goes looking for a reason and always finds one, because there is always one available at three fifty in the morning.

She has done everything.

Four four eight breathing, which she is good at. The app with the rain. The other app. Magnesium. The one where you name five things you can see, and the one where you get up rather than lying there, and the one where you absolutely do not get up. She has cut caffeine at noon for eleven months. She has a notebook by the bed for the reason her mind finds, which was supposed to park it and instead has become a two year archive of three fifty in the morning.

She is forty one. She is not in crisis. She holds a job and she is well liked and her doctor is aware and has been helpful, and she is going back next month.

And what is underneath all of it, and what she has said to nobody, including the doctor, is not about sleep.

It is that peace is on the list, and she does not have it, and everybody who has ever taught her anything about that list has implied, gently and without meaning to, that it grows in people who are getting something right.

She lies in the dark at three fifty and thinks: everybody else has this.

There is a kitchen downstairs that gets very good morning light, and in about three hours it will be full of it, and she will be at the table with her hands round a coffee looking absolutely fine.

You know that hour. Yours might be a different number. And underneath the practical problem is a spiritual one that nobody put there deliberately: the conviction that the missing thing is missing because of you. There is a sentence Jesus says on the last night, to men about to lose everything, and it says exactly whose peace it is.

My peace I give unto you

I have to be careful here, and considerably more careful than usual. There is a version of this that arrives with technique number fourteen, and there is a worse version that arrives with a spiritual technique, which is the same thing with a verse on it. I am not going to hand over either. And I am not going to tell anybody to stop seeing a doctor: the body is not the enemy in this and medicine is not a failure of faith. What follows is about the sentence underneath, not about the hour.

On the last night, to eleven men who are hours from the worst thing that will ever happen to them, Jesus says: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27).

My peace. He calls it His own, and then He gives it away, and the two verbs are leave and give. Nothing in the sentence is asked of them except to receive it.

You are being handed something you have been trying to construct. That is not me softening the verse; John 14:27 has Christ naming the peace as His and then giving it, and the Holy Spirit who carried that into the Gospel recorded a transfer rather than a technique.

And notice the qualifier, because it is the part that speaks directly to a notebook full of methods. Not as the world giveth. The world's giving is conditional, and it is contingent on circumstances, and it is withdrawn when things change. His is not that kind of giving, which means it does not track the state of the room at three fifty.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.John 14:27

The sentence underneath the hour

Now the thing she has said to nobody.

Everybody else has this. That is the sentence, and it is not true, and it has been running for two years and four months underneath a genuinely sensible program of self care.

What has happened, without anybody intending it, is that a list of nine things that Scripture calls fruit has been quietly reheard as a list of nine things that appear in people who are doing well. And on that reading, a missing one is a diagnosis.

You have never been diagnosed by what has not grown yet. Galatians 5:22 calls the whole list the fruit of the Spirit, and a branch is not graded on which fruit has come in; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) is the one growing it, on His own schedule, in a woman who has been awake since three fifty.

This is yours right now, in the dark with your chest going: a peace that was given rather than achieved. John 14:27 puts both verbs on Christ, and the Spirit who carried that sentence into the book did not attach a prerequisite to it.

What peace is not

Let me be exact, because a person who has tried fourteen things deserves precision and not comfort.

The peace in John 14:27 is not the absence of a racing chest. Jesus says it to men whose circumstances are about to become genuinely terrible, and within hours every one of them will be frightened, and He does not withdraw the gift when they are. It is not a mood and it is not a physiological state, and it does not mean a person will sleep through.

It is His, given, present, underneath. And a woman can have it and still be awake at three fifty, and the not sleeping is not evidence about the gift.

That distinction is not a consolation prize. It is the difference between a person who thinks she has failed at peace and a person who is holding something in the dark that her body has not caught up with.

You were given it on the same night He told them not to be troubled, and He knew exactly what was coming. John 14:27 has both halves in one verse; the Holy Spirit who inspired it did not put the gift on one side of the crucifixion and the trouble on the other.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting another technique from me. One thing. At three fifty, when it happens, do not manage it and do not fix it. Tell Him one true sentence about the room, out loud if you can. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. That is not a method, and it does not have to work, and nothing is being assessed.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening right now, in the dark, with the notebook on the nightstand and the hour where it always is.

Two years and four months of trying has quietly become evidence about you, and at three fifty the evidence is always at its most persuasive. This is where that stops, because the peace in question was named as His and given away on a Thursday night before a Friday nobody could have survived.

Right now, as you read, His peace is given rather than earned. John 14:27 says my peace I give unto you, and the Spirit who carried that sentence into the Gospel is the one who brings it into a dark room at three fifty.

It is already yours, and the racing chest is not the receipt for it. John 14:27 gives it in the same breath as He tells them not to be troubled, and the same Spirit who is the earnest of your inheritance (Ephesians 1:14) does not withdraw the gift on a night when your body will not settle.

The mountain here is a sentence that says everybody else has this, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be big; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the hour.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the dark with the word just spoken. Your standing to say them is not something you have slept your way to: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the King's authority, she is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the hour, then to the sentence you have never told anybody, then to the Father. When it grows, and how fast, and whether you feel it before you feel anything else, is His to decide.

  1. Three fifty in the morning, you are not the hour that decides who I am, and you do not get to keep the room. It is written in John 14:27 that Jesus says my peace I give unto you, and His Spirit is the one who carries it in and I have never once manufactured it.
  2. Sentence that everybody else has this, get out of this room in the name of Jesus, because you have run under two years of good sense and were never once said out loud. Galatians 5:22 calls the whole list the fruit of the Spirit, and the Spirit who wrote that never graded a branch on which fruit had come in.
  3. Father, John 14:27 says not as the world gives do You give, and Your Spirit does not withdraw the gift on a night my body will not settle. I have said the word out loud and I am asking You for it plainly, and I am not attaching a method to it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
