Last Stop on the Number Nine

This message is for a woman of fifty eight on the last day of a bus route she drove for twenty two years, sitting in the depot with the keys still in her hand, unable to name one thing twenty two years produced

Twenty two years on the number nine, and the last one takes fifty one minutes, same as all of them.

She does the whole route the way she has always done it. The pull out of the depot at four fifty. The long straight where the light comes through the trees and gets on the mirror at exactly the wrong angle in October. The stop by the clinic where you wait an extra beat because there is always somebody coming and they are always slower than they think. The turn at the bottom that she has taken about eleven thousand times and could take in the dark.

And then the depot, and the yard, and she pulls in and sets the brake and the engine goes off, and it is very quiet.

She is meant to hand the keys in at the office. She is sitting in the cab with them in her hand instead.

Twenty two years. Nine thousand shifts, near enough. And she is doing the thing you do when a thing ends, which is to look for the item. What did twenty two years make. Not the pay, she knows about the pay. What did it make. Is there a thing standing anywhere that would not be standing, is there a person who would say her name, is there anything at all she could put on the desk in that office alongside the keys and say, and this.

She cannot find one. Not one. She has been through it four times now, sitting in a cab with the engine ticking as it cools, and what she keeps arriving at is a route that somebody else drives on Monday and eleven thousand turns at the bottom of the hill that nobody was counting but her.

Somebody knocks on the glass and waves and goes past. The sun is coming through the depot fence and putting stripes across the whole yard.

You have sat in that cab. It might be a desk, a ward, a chair, a machine, a route. Something you did faithfully for a long time that has just stopped, and you have gone looking for the item and come back with nothing. And here is the part that will move under your feet: the item was never what God was counting, and the letter that says so is one of the flattest sentences in the New Testament.

Not by works, and it was never close

I want to be careful, because there is a version of this that hands a tired woman a better column and calls it grace. It is not grace. Counting lives touched instead of items produced is the same arithmetic with a nobler heading, and she will still be sitting in a cab with a total she cannot make come out. So I am not going to hand her a new column. I am going to read her a sentence that has no column in it at all.

Paul writes to Titus and says it as plainly as it has ever been said: Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost (Titus 3:5). Read what is excluded. Not works of unrighteousness. Works of righteousness. The good ones. The nine thousand shifts, the extra beat at the clinic stop, every single one of the eleven thousand careful turns. Excluded, and not because they were bad, but because they were never the currency.

You are held by mercy, and the works you cannot total were never the price of anything. That is not me softening the doctrine to comfort a driver; Titus 3:5 says not by works of righteousness which we have done, and the same verse names the renewing of the Holy Spirit as the thing that actually happened, which means the Spirit was doing the work while she was doing the route.

And notice the two things the verse puts in place of the works. Mercy and the Holy Spirit. Not a reduced standard. Not a kinder scoring. A different economy altogether, in which the question what did it produce simply does not come up, because nothing was ever being purchased.

Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.Titus 3:5

What the doctrine does to the cab

Here is where this stops being theology and starts being about a woman with keys in her hand, because most people believe Titus 3:5 about their salvation and have never once let it near their Tuesday.

She would tell you, if you asked her straight out, that she is not saved by works. She has believed that since she was nineteen. And she has spent this whole afternoon running an accounting that Titus 3:5 has already closed, because the doctrine got filed under how I got in and never got carried out to how I am valued now.

This is yours right now, in the cab, on the same terms it was when you first believed it: mercy, and not a total. Ephesians 2:8 says by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, and the Spirit who breathed that did not put an expiry date on the not of yourselves after which normal accounting resumes.

Now let me say the sentence under the search, because it is not disappointment about a route. It is this: if the twenty two years produced nothing, then the twenty two years were me, and I produced nothing. That is a verdict on a person, reached from evidence about a job, and the leap between the two happened so fast in a quiet cab that she did not see it.

It is already settled who you are, and no route ever held it up. 1 Peter 2:9 says you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a people belonging to God, and every one of those is a status conferred rather than earned; the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a driver rather than a sentence about somebody in a book.

Eleven thousand turns nobody counted

Now the part the item search had no way to reach.

Output is what she went looking for: a thing standing, a name on a wall, something to set on a desk next to the keys. Fruit is what grew on a woman over twenty two years of taking a corner carefully because there is always somebody coming, and it grew in the direction of every person who ever got on that bus and never once thought about it.

That is the design, and it is not a consolation. You were bearing fruit on every one of those eleven thousand turns. John 15:5 says the branch that abides bears much fruit and the branch does not do the growing; the Spirit does, and He moves it outward into other people, which is exactly why it cannot be found in a cab at the end.

So what does staying attached look like this week, and no, there is no program coming. One thing. On the walk to the office, or in the two minutes the kettle takes at home, tell Him about one morning on that route that produced absolutely nothing. The light on the mirror in October. Somebody at the clinic stop. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. That is a branch in a vine, and nobody adds it up.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening right now, in the cab, with the engine ticking and the sun striping the yard.

The search has come up empty for the fourth time, and you have started to take the emptiness as a description of yourself. This is where that stops, because there is a sentence in Titus that closed this account before you ever took the number nine out of the depot.

Right now, as you read, you are not being assessed on the twenty two years. Titus 3:5 says not by works of righteousness which we have done, and that is the whole verse's business; the Spirit who is named in the second half of it is the one who brought you to it sitting in a cab with the keys in your hand.

You have already been given what the route was never going to buy. Titus 3:7 says that being justified by his grace we are made heirs according to the hope of eternal life, and heir is a word about family and not about performance, and the same Spirit who is the earnest of that inheritance is in this yard.

The mountain here is small enough to write on the back of a timesheet, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be big; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the twenty two years.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the folded page in your pocket. Your standing to say them is not something you drove: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the King's authority, she is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the years, then to the verdict you reached about yourself from them, then to the Father. What grows on you after tonight, and when, and whether you are ever shown it, is His to decide.

  1. Twenty two years I cannot add up, you are not my worth and you never were the sum, and I am handing you over tonight. It is written in Titus 3:5 that He saved us not by works of righteousness which we have done, and His Spirit has been at work in me on every one of those mornings.
  2. Verdict I reached in a quiet cab, get out in the name of Jesus, because you jumped from a job to a woman with no evidence for the leap. 1 Peter 2:9 says I am a chosen people and a royal priesthood, and the Spirit who wrote that conferred every word of it.
  3. Father, Titus 3:7 says that being justified by Your grace I am made an heir, and Your Spirit is saying heir over a woman with nothing to set on the desk but keys. I am handing the keys in and going to find the others, and the growing was always Yours.
