The planner is a good one. Hardback, dated, four colors of pen and each color means something, and it is the kind of thing people take photographs of.
Seven fifteen to seven thirty is green, and green means quiet time. Seven thirty to eight ten is orange. Then blue until nine forty because that is the commute and the podcast, and then the day starts properly.
She is twenty four and she filled this in on a Sunday afternoon feeling wonderful about it, and she has kept it for eleven weeks, which nobody does. Not one blank line since the first week of the term. She could show you.
And she is sitting at the kitchen table at ten past nine at night with tomorrow already filled in, and she is so tired that she has read the same line four times, and a question has arrived that she does not know what to do with.
When was the last time she did something that was not on the page.
Not a wasted evening. Those are on there too, scheduled, in the pale color, which is rest. She means something else. She means something unplanned that she wanted to do and then did, the way a person does. And she is going back through eleven weeks in her head, and she cannot find one, and she is not sure she can find one in the eleven months before that either.
The green block is the one that has hold of her. Fifteen minutes with God, seven fifteen to seven thirty, every day, done, ticked, every single one of the eleven weeks. And if she is honest, and the kitchen is quiet enough that she is, she cannot tell you one thing that has happened in a single one of those green blocks. She has been there. She has ticked it. That is all she can say for it.
The dishwasher is doing its thing. Somebody's phone is charging on the counter. She turns the page to tomorrow, which is already full, and puts the pen down and does not pick it up.
You have kept that page. Maybe not in four colors, but you have kept the system, and you have ticked the block, and you know exactly the tiredness of a well run life that has nothing loose in it anywhere. And the system is not the villain. The trouble is that somewhere in the eleven weeks the nearness became a thing to be produced, and the one voice in the New Testament that speaks to exactly this offers something that cannot be produced at all.
The invitation is to the ones already carrying
I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that hands a tired young woman a better planner and calls it discipleship. It is not discipleship. Swapping the fifteen minutes for thirty, or moving the green block to the evening, or adding a habit tracker, leaves her exactly where she is, which is producing a relationship. So there is no system coming, and there is not going to be one.
Jesus says: Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). Look at who is addressed. Not the lazy. The laboring, and the loaded, which is the whole population of people who keep planners. And look at the verb attached to the rest. Give. It is not achieved, arranged, scheduled or earned. It is handed over.
You are being handed something you have been trying to arrange. That is not a soft reading; Matthew 11:28 says I will give you rest, and the Holy Spirit who carried that sentence into the Gospel is holding it out at a kitchen table at ten past nine at night.
Then the next two verses do the thing nobody expects. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:29-30). He answers a tired person by offering a yoke. Not no yoke. His.
A yoke is what two animals wear so that one of them can carry what the other cannot. The offer is not that the work stops. The offer is that the pulling stops being solitary.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.Matthew 11:28-29
Abiding is not a block
Now John 15, because this whole site stands on it and this is the moment it matters.
Jesus says: Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me (John 15:4). Read what a branch actually does. It does not do anything. There is no branch technique. It is attached, and sap comes up through it, and something appears on it that it did not make.
That is why abiding cannot be a green block. A block is a thing you do between other things. Attachment is the condition you are in while you do everything, including the orange and the blue and the pale one.
You have been attached the whole eleven weeks, including the mornings that felt like nothing. John 15:4 makes abiding a place rather than a performance, and the Spirit is the sap in it; a branch does not stop being attached on a morning when it cannot feel the sap moving.
And that is the guardrail on this, said plainly: feeling nothing in a green block is not evidence of distance. It is evidence that fifteen minutes at seven fifteen is not where a person's nearness to God is kept.
This is yours right now, with tomorrow already filled in: a place in Him that no system built and no system can dismantle. Colossians 3:3 says your life is hidden with Christ in God, and hidden is not a thing you maintain; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) has been doing it in every color on that page.
What the tiredness is actually about
Let me name the thing under the question, because it is not overwork. She is twenty four and she has plenty of energy for things she wants.
It sounds like this: if I stop running the system, I will find out that nothing was really happening, and I would rather be tired than find that out. That is the fear, and it is why the page is full, and she has never said it to anybody.
You were never being measured by the ticks, and God has not once looked at the page. 1 Samuel 16:7 says the Lord looks on the heart while everybody else looks at the outward appearance, and a planner is about as outward as an appearance gets; the Holy Spirit has been reading eleven weeks that the four colors could not describe.
Fruit is not output, and this is where the difference lands in a kitchen. Output is the ticked block. Fruit is what has been growing on a young woman who gets up at seven fifteen for God even when she feels nothing, and Galatians 5:22 calls that kind of thing faithfulness, and it is on the Spirit's list, not on hers.
So here is what is happening right now, at the table, with tomorrow full and the pen down.
The question has arrived and you have been trying to answer it out of the planner, which is the one book in the house that cannot answer it. This is where that stops, because the rest was never on the page.
Right now, as you read, Jesus is holding out rest to somebody who is already carrying. Matthew 11:28 is addressed to the laboring and the loaded, which is exactly who is sitting at this table, and the Spirit who carried that invitation into the book is extending it tonight rather than describing it.
It is already yours, and the tick was never the transaction. Ephesians 1:3 says He has blessed you with every spiritual blessing in Christ, past tense and all of it, and the same Spirit who is the earnest of that (Ephesians 1:14) is not waiting on a green block to release any of it.
The mountain here is small enough that it fits in fifteen minutes on a page, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be large; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the block.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the table with the planner shut. Your standing to say them is not something you scheduled: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the King's authority, she is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the block, then to the fear you have never said out loud, then to the Father. What grows on you after this, and when, and whether you feel any of it, is His to decide.
- Block that says pray from seven fifteen, you are not my nearness to God, and you do not get to keep me tired. It is written in Matthew 11:28 that Jesus says come unto me and I will give you rest, and His Spirit is holding that out to a woman with a full page.
- Fear that nothing is really happening, get off this table in the name of Jesus, because you have been running the system for eleven weeks and you have never once been examined. John 15:4 says the branch abides and does not manufacture, and the Spirit is the sap and not my effort.
- Father, Matthew 11:30 says Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light, and Your Spirit is offering that to somebody who filled in tomorrow before she was tired enough to stop. I am taking ten minutes this week with nothing to show for it, and the growing was always Yours.
