Bread on the Water, and No Report

It stopped in March, and the way it stopped is what she cannot get past.

There was no argument. There was no incident. There were two messages that took a day each to answer and then were answered briefly, and then a third that was not answered, and then a fourth, three weeks later, from her, saying something light and easy to reply to, and nothing.

That is nine months ago now.

The four years before that were not casual. She would like that understood, if only by herself, because she has started to describe them to herself as if they were casual, which is a thing you do when you are trying to make something hurt less and it makes it hurt in a different place.

Four years. The hospital stretch. The move. The year with the lawyers. Three hundred conversations, some of them at two in the morning, and a great many of them the same conversation, which she never once said out loud was the same conversation.

She is thirty seven. She is on her own couch on a Sunday afternoon with the window full of that gold light you get in the autumn, and she has been sitting here for a while.

And what she has arrived at, over nine months, is not anger. It is a revision. She has gone back over the four years and started to reclassify them: not friendship, apparently; something she was doing that she thought was mutual and evidently was not; four years she gave to a person who could stop, without a word, in March, and be fine.

And once you start reclassifying four years you do not stop there. She has begun to wonder about other things she has given. That is the actual damage and it has nothing to do with a friend who stopped replying.

There is a mug on the table she has not moved. The light is coming right across the floor.

You have that stretch. Somebody you carried, and then it stopped, and there was no reason given, and you have spent the time since revising your own history downward. There is a line in Ecclesiastes about bread and water that is often quoted and almost never understood, and it says something exact about what happens to things you send out.

Cast it where you cannot follow it

I have to be careful here, because there is a version of this that sends her asking. Message her again. Ask what happened. You deserve an explanation. I am not going to say it, and not because asking is forbidden, but because a woman nine months into a revision will be asking for a verdict on herself, and no reply from anybody could carry that weight.

Ecclesiastes says: cast your bread upon the waters, for you shall find it after many days (Ecclesiastes 11:1).

People read that as a promise about return and stop there. Look at the picture first. Bread. On water. That is a thing you cannot follow, cannot track, cannot retrieve and cannot supervise. The image is deliberately of something released into a medium that moves.

You have released things into a current you were never able to follow. That is not me softening the verse; Ecclesiastes 11:1 chooses water rather than soil, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that image picked the one surface that carries a thing out of sight immediately.

And then read the second half, and read it exactly. You shall find it after many days. Not: it will come back from the person it was given to. Not: they will return it. You shall find it, which is a word about a discovery somewhere else, and after many days, which is a phrase designed to be vague about when.

The next verse says give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth (Ecclesiastes 11:2). The whole passage is about acting generously in conditions where you cannot see the outcome. That is not a caveat in the passage. That is the subject of it.

The revision is the injury

Now the thing that has actually been happening for nine months, because it is not the silence.

The silence is painful and it is also, in itself, small. What has grown out of it is a revision of history, and history does not revise selectively. She started with one friendship and she is now quietly reassessing four years, and after that she will reassess other things, because that is what a revision does once it is running.

You have never had the standing to reclassify your own kindness after the fact. 1 Corinthians 13:7 says love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, and it is describing what love does rather than what love gets; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) was in every one of those two in the morning conversations, and love was what it was at the time.

This is yours right now, on your own couch in the gold: four years that were real when they happened and did not stop being real in March. Galatians 6:9 says let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not, and due season is God's timing and not a friend's; the Spirit who carried that into the letter did not attach the harvest to the recipient.

Why she is not owed the reason

Let me say the hard part gently, because it matters.

She may never know why. People stop for reasons that have nothing to do with the person they stop replying to: shame, exhaustion, a life that got unrecognizable, the peculiar way that being carried can start to feel like a debt. Any of those would explain March. None of them would be about her.

And she is not going to find out, and the not finding out is not a further injustice, it is the ordinary condition of loving somebody you cannot control.

Fruit is not output, and four years of two in the morning is where it shows. Output would be a friendship that continued, which is visible and countable and gone. Fruit is what grew in a woman over four years of showing up, and Galatians 5:22 calls part of that longsuffering and part of it kindness, and it is in her now and did not leave in March.

You were bearing fruit through all four years and some of it stayed in you. John 15:5 says the branch that abides bears much fruit and it never once says the branch is shown where it went; the Holy Spirit did the growing, and He grew some of it outward and some of it in.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. While the kettle does what it does anyway, tell Him about one of those late conversations with nothing asked for. Not a request for an explanation. One night, one call, the sound of a kitchen at two in the morning. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody grades that.
