Growing In OthersProverbs 11:25

Standing at the Counter Translating

This message is for a man of forty eight who has stood at a hundred counters saying other people's words for them, and who has never once been told what happened next in a single one of those lives

He has a voice he uses for it and he did not choose it, it developed.

It is slightly slower than his own voice and slightly flatter, because the flatness is what keeps his own feelings out of a sentence that is not his. He learned that in the first year, when he cried once, in front of the woman he was speaking for, and the whole thing came apart and had to be finished by somebody at the desk.

Twenty years. Clinics, mostly. Also a housing office for a while and, three times, a courtroom. He is not paid for most of it. He gets a call and he goes and he stands at a counter half a step behind somebody's shoulder and says their words in the language of the building and then says the building's words back in theirs.

He is forty eight. And there is a thing about this work that nobody who has not done it would guess.

He never finds out.

He stands at a counter for forty minutes with a woman while the whole shape of her life gets decided, and then the appointment ends and she says thank you and they walk out of the building together and she goes left and he goes right and that is the end of it, permanently.

He has done that, he thinks, several hundred times. And there is not one, not one in twenty years, where he knows what happened next. Whether the treatment worked. Whether the housing came through. Whether the man in the third courtroom went home.

It never used to bother him. It has started to, in the last year or so, and it comes on him in odd places, and today it came on him in the waiting room of a clinic he has been coming to for eleven years while he waited for somebody to arrive.

He sat there in the afternoon light with his badge on and thought: I have spent twenty years standing next to people at the exact moment their life turns, and I do not know how a single one of those stories ends.

You know that counter. It might be a ward, a phone line, a desk, a doorway. Somewhere you stand next to people at the hinge of things and then they walk out and the story closes behind them. And there is a line in Proverbs about watering that has something specific to say to a man who has spent twenty years pouring at counters.

The one who waters is watered

I have to be careful here, because there is a version of this that sends him looking. Ask the clinic. Follow one up. Get an ending for at least one story. I am not going to say it, and not only because most of it would be improper, but because a man who needs one ending will be needing it about himself, and the ending is not the clinic's to give him.

Proverbs says: The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself (Proverbs 11:25).

Read the second half slowly. He that waters shall be watered. Not: he that waters shall be shown the crop. Not: he that waters shall receive a report on the field. Watered. The return promised to the one who pours is the same substance he poured, arriving in him, from somewhere else, without any connection to the field he poured on.

You have been receiving something the whole twenty years and it never came from the counter. That is not me sweetening the proverb; Proverbs 11:25 promises watering rather than information, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that line put the return in a different currency from the report on purpose.

And notice the first half, which people skip. The liberal soul shall be made fat. That is a Hebrew way of saying that the generous person is the one who ends up full, and the fullness is not described as coming back from the recipient. It comes from God, into the giver, sideways.

The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.Proverbs 11:25

Why it started bothering him

Now the thing that has changed in the last year, because it is not the work.

For eighteen years the not knowing was simply the shape of the job. What has changed is that he has begun to need one of them to have ended well, and that need is doing something quiet and corrosive: it has moved the meaning of twenty years from the standing to the outcome, and the outcome is the one thing he has never had access to.

You have never been paid in outcomes, and the value of the standing did not move. Matthew 25:40 says inasmuch as you have done it unto one of the least of these you have done it unto me, and the doing is what is named and the result is not mentioned at all; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) has been at every counter.

This is yours right now, in a waiting room with your badge on: work that was completed at the moment it was done. Colossians 3:23 says do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men, and a thing done to the Lord is delivered at the doing; the Spirit who carried that into the letter did not make the delivery conditional on a follow up call.

The half step behind the shoulder

Let me say something about the position he stands in, because it is the whole picture.

Half a step behind somebody's shoulder is not the place a person stands to be seen. It is the place a person stands so that somebody else can be understood. That flattened voice, the removed feelings, the whole discipline of twenty years, exists so that the person he is standing behind gets to be the one in the room.

That is a description of fruit rather than of output, and it is exact. Output is what a man can point at afterward. Fruit grew in a woman at a counter who was able to say her own sentence in a building that could not hear her, and it left the building with her, in her, going left while he went right.

You were bearing fruit that walked out of the building in somebody else. John 15:5 says the branch that abides bears much fruit and it never once says the branch is shown it; the Holy Spirit does the growing and He carries it away from the branch, which is exactly why twenty years of it cannot be found in a waiting room.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. On the walk to the bus you already take, tell Him about one appointment with nothing asked for. Not a request for news. One counter, one voice, forty minutes. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody grades that.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening right now, in the waiting room, with the light through the big windows and your badge still on.

You have started needing an ending, and the needing has quietly moved the point of twenty years from the standing to the outcome. This is where that gets reversed, because a proverb promises the pourer water rather than a report, and it has been true for the whole twenty.

Right now, as you read, the one who waters is being watered. Proverbs 11:25 says shall be watered also himself, and the arrival is God's business and does not come back up the same channel it went down, and the Spirit who inspired that line brought you to it sitting in a clinic.

You are already full in the way the proverb means it. Proverbs 11:25 calls the generous soul made fat, and the same Spirit who is the earnest of your inheritance (Ephesians 1:14) has been filling a man who thought he was only pouring.

The mountain here is a need that arrived about a year ago, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be big; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the counters.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with her name just spoken. Your standing to say them is not something anybody confirmed: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the King's authority, he is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the counters, then to the need that arrived last year, then to the Father. What became of those people, and when, and whether you are ever told, is His to decide.

  1. Hundred counters I have stood at, you are not a list of unfinished stories, and you do not get another Saturday out of me. It is written in Proverbs 11:25 that the one who waters shall be watered also himself, and His Spirit has been doing the watering on both sides of that counter.
  2. Need for one of them to end well, get out of this room in the name of Jesus, because you arrived quietly last year and moved the point of twenty years without permission. Matthew 25:40 says the doing is done unto Him, and the Spirit who wrote that never mentioned the result.
  3. Father, Colossians 3:23 says to do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men, and Your Spirit took delivery of every one of those afternoons at the moment they happened. I have named her out loud and blessed her and I am not going looking, and the growing was always Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
