What Do You Have in the House

He has stopped offering, and he can date it, because it was the second time in two weeks that he had nothing to say.

His daughter was at the table with something difficult in her life. Not a catastrophe. The ordinary kind: a decision she cannot make, going round and round, wanting somebody to say a sentence that would settle it.

And he sat there and he had nothing.

He is fifty eight. He was the man people came to. That is not vanity; it was simply the arrangement in this family for about twenty five years, and it worked, and he was good at it, and there were about eleven years in the middle where he did not have an evening to himself and did not mind.

Something went out of him about three years ago. He would not use the word depression and his doctor has not either. He would say he ran out.

And what he has done since, quietly, without announcing it, is stop offering. He listens. He is warm. He puts food in front of people, which he can still do and does. But the thing where he used to say the sentence has stopped, and everybody has noticed and nobody has said anything, and his daughter has started taking the difficult things to her aunt.

He is not bitter about that either. He is glad she has somewhere.

He is sitting on a cushion at the low table after everybody has gone, with the dishes still out, and the evening light is doing the thing it does in this room in the last half hour, and what is going round in him is a sentence he has believed for about eighteen months: I have nothing left to give them.

There is a woman in Kings with a debt and two sons about to be taken, and a prophet asks her one question before anything else happens.

What have you in the house

I have to be careful here, and considerably more careful than usual, because this is where somebody normally hands over a duty. They are your family. You owe them. Dig deeper. I am not going to do that. A man who is genuinely empty does not need to be told to try harder at the one thing he has run out of, and turning his own table into a debt is how a family becomes an accusation.

In 2 Kings 4 a widow comes to Elisha. Her husband is dead, there is a debt, and the creditor is coming for her two sons. It is as bad as a situation gets.

And Elisha asks her two questions, and the second one is the one that matters here: What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? (2 Kings 4:2).

Not: what do you need. Not: what has been taken from you. But what is in the house.

And she answers the way anybody answers that question when they are at the end: your servant has not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

Not any thing. That is her assessment, given honestly, and it is wrong by exactly one pot.

You have something in the house, and the assessment that says otherwise has always been off by one. That is not me softening the story; 2 Kings 4:2 has her say not any thing and then correct herself in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit who preserved that sentence kept both halves of it.

And notice where the whole thing starts. It starts with what is already on her shelf. Nothing is brought in from outside. The oil that fills every vessel in the neighborhood is the oil that was in that house before Elisha arrived.

And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.2 Kings 4:2

Save a pot of oil

Let me stay on her sentence, because it is exactly his.

Not any thing, save a pot of oil. She says the second clause almost as an afterthought, as a correction to her own summary, and it is the clause the entire miracle runs on.

He would say: I have nothing left to give them. And if you pressed him, the way Elisha pressed her, he would say: except that I cook. Except that I am here every evening. Except that I still listen, which he does, better than he used to, because a man who has stopped having answers listens differently.

That is the pot of oil, and he has been filing it under nothing.

You have been calling the remaining thing nothing because it is not the thing you used to have. 2 Corinthians 12:9 has God saying my strength is made perfect in weakness, and the strength named there is His and the weakness is the site of it; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) has not been waiting for a man to get back to twenty five years ago.

This is yours right now, at a low table with the dishes still out: a supply that starts from what is already on the shelf. 2 Kings 4:2 begins the whole account with what is in the house, and the Spirit who preserved it did not import anything from anywhere else.

Nobody in that story was told to try harder

One more thing, because a man in his position will hear any of this as an instruction.

Elisha does not tell her to work. He tells her to borrow vessels, and then to shut the door, and then to pour. The pouring is the only thing she does and it is not effort, it is emptying.

She is told, specifically, to shut the door upon herself and upon her sons (2 Kings 4:4). The miracle happens in a closed house with nobody watching, among the people who live there.

You were never asked to produce anything; you were asked what was already there. 2 Kings 4:4 has the door shut and the household inside, and the whole increase happens among the people in that room; the Holy Spirit who preserved that detail set the scene indoors on purpose.

Fruit is not output, and a low table is where the difference shows. Output is the sentence he used to be able to say: the answer, the settling word, the thing people came for. Fruit is what grows on a man who still puts food in front of people at fifty eight with nothing left, and John 15:4 says the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, and it does not specify what the branch has in reserve.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. While the coffee does what it does anyway, tell Him one true thing about the three years with nothing asked for and nothing requested back. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody measures that.
