The Way I Speak to the Ones Who Work for Me

He only heard it because of a voice note.

He had sent a message to the supplier and it had not gone, and he replayed it to check, and the recording had caught about nine seconds before he thought it had started.

Nine seconds of him talking to the youngest man on the crew about a run of blocks that was out.

He listened to it once and put the phone face down on the wall.

He is fifty. He has run this crew for eleven years and he has never lost a man to a competitor, and two of them have been with him the whole time, and he pays properly and he pays on the day, and if you asked any of the five they would say he is a good man to work for, and they would mean it.

And in those nine seconds he sounded exactly like a man called Vasilis who was his foreman when he was nineteen.

Not similar. The same. The same flat drop at the end of the sentence. The same way of saying the man's name first, so that the correction lands on the person before it lands on the work. He has spent thirty one years not being Vasilis, deliberately, in a way he has never told anybody about, and he heard him come out of his own mouth on a Tuesday.

The site at the end of the day, when the crew have gone and the light comes low along the terrace and gets into every joint in the stonework, is his favorite ten minutes of the week.

He sat on the wall with his phone face down and did not enjoy them.

You have heard it. Maybe on a recording, maybe in a room, maybe from the face of somebody who was looking at you when you did not know they were. The one you did not want to be, coming out of you, in the exact register. There is half a verse in the psalms about gentleness that says something about whose it is, and it is not a psalm about becoming a gentler person.

Thy gentleness hath made me great

I have to be careful here, and more careful than usual, because this is where somebody normally hands over a practice. Pause before you speak. Count to three. Work on your tone for a month. I am not going to do that. Gentleness is on a list in Galatians of things the Spirit grows, and a man who takes it on as a personal improvement project will be running that project at fifty five, and at sixty, and losing.

David, in a long psalm about being rescued, says something in the middle of a stack of military language that does not belong there at all. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great (Psalm 18:35).

Thy gentleness. God's, not his. And it is the thing that made him great, in a psalm where he has just finished describing bent bows and pursued enemies, and the word that arrives at the summit of all of it is gentleness.

You have been made whatever you are by a gentleness that was never yours to produce. That is not me stretching the verse; Psalm 18:35 puts the gentleness on God's side and the greatness on the man's, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that line put them in that order.

And notice what it does not say. It does not say his gentleness made him great. It does not commend David's manner at all. The whole verse is a list of things done to him: a shield given, a right hand holding him up, a gentleness applied.

Thirty one years of not being him

Now the thing that has actually been running since he was nineteen.

He has been managing it. That is the honest word. He has not been becoming gentle; he has been operating a lifelong containment system on a thing he decided at nineteen was in him and had to be kept in. And it has worked, mostly, for thirty one years, which is why the nine seconds landed the way they did: not as evidence of a bad Tuesday, but as evidence that the containment has a limit and that the thing inside it is exactly what he always thought.

That is a heavy way to run a life and nobody on that crew knows he is doing it.

You have never had to hold in what God intends to grow out. Ezekiel 36:26 says God gives a new heart and puts a new spirit within, and the giving and the putting are both His verbs; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) is not a lid on the old thing, He is the growth of a new one.

This is yours right now, on that wall with the phone face down: a gentleness that arrives as supply rather than as self control at the end of a long day. Galatians 5:22 lists gentleness among the fruit of the Spirit, possessive and unambiguous; the Spirit who inspired that phrase named whose fruit it is in the phrase itself.

Vasilis at nineteen

Let me say something about the man in the recording, because it matters and it is not a detour.

Vasilis spoke to a nineteen year old that way, and a nineteen year old took it in and has carried the sound of it for thirty one years. That is what happened, and it is worth naming plainly rather than being generous about it.

And here is what is also true and much harder to sit with: Vasilis got it from somewhere. Almost certainly the same way.

That is not an excuse for anybody and it is not a demand that a man forgive somebody this afternoon on a wall. It is one observation: what came out of his mouth on Tuesday came down a line, and a thing that comes down a line is not the permanent shape of the person it lands on.

You were not given the sound in that recording as your nature. 1 Peter 1:18 says you were redeemed from the vain manner of life received by tradition from your fathers, and manner of life received by tradition is exactly what a foreman's voice is; the Holy Spirit who carried that into the letter named the inheritance specifically so that somebody could be got out of it.

Fruit is not output, and a crew is where the difference shows. Output would be a change in tone, measurable, a thing you could report at the end of a month. Fruit is what grows on a man who stays attached, and John 15:4 says the branch cannot do it of itself, which means the thirty one year containment project was never the mechanism and was always going to be tiring.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. In the ten minutes at the end of the day when the crew have gone, tell Him one true thing with nothing asked for and no resolution attached. The light in the joints. The run of blocks. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody assesses that.
