The Thing I Said at the Kitchen Table

Midnight, near enough. The kitchen light on and everybody else in the house asleep, and a conversation that had started about something small and had been going for forty minutes.

And then she said it.

It was one sentence. It was accurate, which is the worst part, because a thing that is not true can be taken back and a thing that is true cannot. She had been holding it for about six years and it came out of her at midnight in a kitchen at a volume that was not loud, which is somehow worse than shouting.

The other person did not say anything for a moment and then said all right, and went upstairs.

She is thirty four. She sat at that table until about ten past one with a mug of something she did not drink.

Here is what was going round, and it is not what you would expect. It was not the sentence. She could apologize for the sentence and she will and it will be a real apology and it will help. What was going round was much older and much wider.

She has known since she was fifteen. There was a thing on a wall in a room where she went to a group as a teenager, and it had nine things on it, and she went down the list at fifteen and knew which one was hers, and she has been quietly certain ever since.

Nineteen years. She has read the books. She has done a course, once, which helped for about eleven weeks. She has an actual technique she uses, which is to leave the room, and she used it three times last year and did not use it at midnight because she was too far in by the time she noticed.

And at ten past one in the morning she thought the sentence she thinks every time, which is: this is what I am like, and everybody who has ever been close to me knows it.

The kitchen light at one in the morning is a color of light nobody enjoys, and she sat under it with her hands round a cold mug.

You have that sentence and you have your one. And it is not the thing you said, it is the older certainty underneath it, and you have carried it since you were young enough for it to feel like a fact about your species rather than an opinion about you. There is a verse Paul wrote to a frightened young man that names what God gave, and it is not a target.

He gave a spirit of a sound mind

I have to be careful here, and considerably more careful than usual, because this is the exact place where somebody normally hands over a technique. Leave the room. Count. Have a phrase ready. And here is the thing: those are not bad, and she should keep the leaving one, because it is practical and it has worked three times. But a technique is a fence and this is not about a fence.

Paul writes to Timothy, who is young and frightened and has been given a job too big for him: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

Read the verb. God has given. Past tense, completed, His action. And then read the three things: power, love, and a sound mind. The last phrase is one word in the Greek and it means something like a mind that is safe, disciplined, in its right proportion, not running away with itself.

You have been given a sound mind rather than set the task of building one. That is not me softening the verse; 2 Timothy 1:7 has God as the subject and given as the verb, and the Holy Spirit who carried that into the letter did not put a single instruction in the sentence.

And notice what it is set against. Not chaos. Fear. God has not given us the spirit of fear, but. Which means whatever that midnight sentence came out of, it came out of something that has fear underneath it, and Paul's answer to fear is not a technique either, it is a statement about what has already been handed over.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.2 Timothy 1:7

Nineteen years is the actual subject

Now the thing that has been running since she was fifteen, because it is bigger than a Tuesday.

A girl looked at a list on a wall and identified her own defect, and has spent nineteen years confirming it. Every incident has been evidence. Every good stretch has been an exception. That is not a character; that is a case that has been building since before she could drive, with no defense counsel at any point.

And the case has a verdict clause in it that she says at one in the morning: this is what I am like.

You have never been what a case built at fifteen says you are. 1 Corinthians 6:11 says such were some of you, but you are washed, sanctified, justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God, and the were is doing the work in that sentence; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) was named in that verse as the agent of the change.

This is yours right now, under a bad kitchen light: three things that were given and not assigned. 2 Timothy 1:7 names power, love and a sound mind as gifts; the Spirit who inspired that line put all three in the completed past.

The apology is not the repair

One more thing, and it is practical rather than devotional.

She will apologize, and she should, and it will be a proper one, and it will matter. But an apology repairs the evening. It does nothing at all to the nineteen years, and if she treats the apology as the whole of what is needed she will be back at this table at some point in the next two years having exactly the same one in the morning.

The evening needs an apology. The nineteen years needs something given.

You were never going to fix nineteen years with a good apology. Ezekiel 36:26 says God gives a new heart and puts a new spirit within, and both verbs belong to Him; the Holy Spirit who inspired that promise addressed the thing underneath and not the incident.

Fruit is not output, and a kitchen at midnight is where the difference is sharp. Output is a stretch of months with no incident, which she has produced before by force and which ended. Fruit is what grows on a person who stays attached, and John 15:4 says the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, which is not a criticism, it is how growing works.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. While the kettle does what it does anyway, tell Him one true thing with nothing asked for and no resolution attached. Not a plan for next time. One true thing. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody grades that.
