The Names I Wrote on the Register

This message is for a man of fifty five who taught a night class for eleven years, kept every attendance register in a box, and cannot say what became of one single name on any of them

The box came out because of a leak, and the leak was in the wrong place, and now there is a box on the kitchen table that has been under the stairs since two thousand and nineteen.

Eleven years of registers. A4, softbound, one per term, three terms a year, thirty three of them, and every one is full of his own handwriting because he never let anybody else take the register, which was a small vanity he would not have admitted to.

Tuesday nights, seven to nine, in a room that was too hot in September and too cold from November. Adults who had come back to it. People at the ends of long days. He taught the same subject for eleven years and got better at it for about six and then plateaued and did not mind.

He is fifty five and it ended in two thousand and nineteen, and he has not opened the box until tonight.

There are names in here he can still see the faces of. There is a woman who came for two terms and then wrote at the bottom of a form that it had changed things. There is a man who was fifty six when he started and would sit at the front and ask the question everybody else was too embarrassed to ask.

He can put a face to maybe forty of them out of, at a guess, six hundred.

And he does not know what happened to one single person in this box.

Not one. Not the woman who wrote on the form. Not the man at the front. He got a Christmas card from somebody for three years and then it stopped and he never knew whether that meant something.

Six hundred names, thirty three registers, eleven years of Tuesdays, and every one of them walked out of a too hot room and into a life he has no access to whatsoever.

The kitchen light is on and the box is open and he has a register in his lap and it is nine o'clock, which is when the class used to finish.

You have that box. Yours might be a class list, a team sheet, a ward schedule, a folder of case numbers, a church roll from a decade you gave everything to. And somewhere in the middle of an ordinary evening you have opened it and been hit by the arithmetic. There is a verse in the last book of the Old Testament about a different kind of record, and it was written for exactly this.

A book of remembrance was written

I have to be careful here, because there is a version of this that sends him tracing. Look them up. Six hundred names, you could find fifty. Find out what happened. I am not going to say it, and not because it would be impossible, but because a man with a register in his lap at nine at night is not looking for news about them, he is looking for a verdict about eleven years, and no search will hold that.

Malachi is writing to people who have concluded, out loud, that serving God is pointless because nothing visible comes of it. That is not my summary; the chapter records them saying it is vain to serve God, and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance (Malachi 3:14).

And then this: Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name (Malachi 3:16).

A book of remembrance. Written before Him. And notice what gets recorded in it: not achievements, not outcomes, not results. Conversations. People who feared God talking to each other, and God listening, and writing it down.

You have been entered in a record that took an interest in things nobody would think to record. That is not me softening the passage; Malachi 3:16 says a book of remembrance was written before Him, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that line specified that what was written down was people talking.

And note when it was written. In a period where the people around them had concluded that serving God produced nothing. The book was being kept at the exact moment the evidence looked worst.

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him.Malachi 3:16

Two records, and only one of them counts

Now the thing about the box, because there is an irony in it he has not seen.

He kept thirty three registers with his own hand for eleven years, and what is in them is attendance. Present, absent, present, present. They are the least informative document imaginable about what happened in that room, and they are the only record he has, and he is sitting at a table at nine o'clock trying to make them tell him something they were never designed to say.

Meanwhile, according to Malachi, another book has been open the whole time, kept by somebody who was in the room every Tuesday, and it records the things registers cannot.

You have never had access to the record that actually holds those eleven years. Malachi 3:16 puts the book before Him and not before you, and the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) was in a room that was too hot in September.

This is yours right now, with a register in your lap: eleven years already written down by somebody who was present for all of them. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and the love you have showed toward His name, and the forgetting is what is ruled out and the reporting is not promised; the Spirit does the keeping.

Six hundred, and the ones you can see

Let me stay with the forty faces, because a man doing this arithmetic at nine o'clock always runs it the punishing way.

Forty faces out of six hundred. He reads that as a failure: five hundred and sixty he cannot even picture. Turn it over. He can still see forty faces, seven years after the last class, from a night course, unprompted, in his own kitchen. Forty adults are still in a man's head because they sat in a horseshoe on Tuesdays and asked him things.

And out there, in a direction he cannot look, six hundred people carry whatever they carry from a room that was too cold from November.

That is fruit and not output, and it is exact. Output is the register: countable, filed, entirely uninformative. Fruit is what a fifty six year old man did with the answer to a question nobody else would ask, and John 15:5 puts the bearing on the branch and the seeing nowhere at all.

You were bearing fruit that got up at nine and walked out into the parking lot. John 15:5 says the branch that abides bears much fruit and never once says the branch is shown it; the Holy Spirit did the growing and He grew it in the direction of six hundred lives.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. In the ten minutes before you go up, tell Him about one Tuesday with nothing asked for. Not a request for news of anybody. One room, one question, one face at the front. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody files that.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening right now, at the kitchen table, with a register in your lap and the clock at nine.

A leak put a box on your table and the arithmetic started, and it has been running for an hour and it always comes out the same way. This is where it stops, because there is a book of remembrance in Malachi and it was being written in exactly the years when nothing looked like it was working.

Right now, as you read, a book of remembrance has already been written before Him. Malachi 3:16 puts it in the past tense and puts the keeping on His side, and the Spirit who inspired that line brought you to a box at nine at night to read it.

You are already written down, and thirty three registers were never the record. Hebrews 6:10 says God does not forget your work and the love you have showed toward His name, and the same Spirit who is the earnest of your inheritance (Ephesians 1:14) sat in that horseshoe every Tuesday for eleven years.

The mountain here fits in a cardboard box, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be big; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the registers.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the register open and the name just spoken. Your standing to say them is not something the registers recorded: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the King's authority, he is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the registers, then to the arithmetic you keep running one way, then to the Father. What became of those six hundred, and when, and whether you are ever told, is His to decide.

  1. Box of registers under the stairs, you are not the record that matters, and you are not the one keeping the account. It is written in Malachi 3:16 that a book of remembrance was written before Him, and His Spirit has been keeping names I ticked and never followed.
  2. Arithmetic I keep running the punishing way, stop in the name of Jesus, because you have only ever counted the five hundred and sixty. Hebrews 6:10 says God does not forget the work and the love, and the Spirit who wrote that has been reading eleven years that no register could hold.
  3. Father, Malachi 3:16 says the book was written while the people around them had decided that serving You produced nothing, and Your Spirit was writing at the worst possible moment for the evidence. I have named him out loud and blessed him and I am not going looking, and the growing was always Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
