Growing In Others1 Corinthians 3:6

The Girl Who Sat Behind Me in Choir

This message is for a woman of twenty nine who once said one sentence to a girl at a lunch table and has never known what that sentence did, and who has slowly come to believe that nothing she says lands anywhere at all

There is a photograph on her phone from ten years ago that she has never deleted and that she looks at maybe twice a year.

It is a school choir. Thirty five girls on risers in a hall with terrible acoustics. She is in the second row and she is fifteen and she looks like somebody wearing a face they have not grown into yet.

And on the end of the third row, behind her and to the left, is a girl whose name was Sadie.

Here is the whole of it, and it takes about nine seconds to tell. They were not friends. They were in the same choir for two terms. And one lunchtime Sadie was sitting on the wall outside the music block on her own, in that particular way that means it is not a choice, and she went and sat down next to her, not out of virtue, out of not knowing what else to do, and after about a minute she said one sentence.

She has never told anybody what the sentence was and she is not going to now. It was eleven words and it was about Sadie and it was true.

And Sadie looked at her and did not say anything, and about a minute after that the bell went, and that is the end of the story. Sadie left at the end of that year. She does not know where. She has looked, twice, in the way you look, and there is nothing.

She is twenty nine now. And what she has done with those nine seconds over fourteen years is turn them slowly into evidence.

Because if the one time she ever said the right thing at the right moment to the right person produced no visible result whatsoever, then probably nothing she says goes anywhere, and she has more or less believed that since she was about twenty two. It is why she does not speak up in the group she has been in for three years. It is why she edits messages down to nothing. She would not say any of that out loud and she would deny it if you put it to her kindly.

She is at the back of a church hall on a Saturday afternoon with a plastic cup, and somebody has just said something to her that she is going to spend the rest of the day thinking about, and she has no idea that it is the same nine seconds happening in the other direction.

You have that photograph. Maybe not a photograph. But you have the moment you said the true thing and nothing happened, and you have quietly built a general law out of one unreported case. And the law is wrong, and Paul dismantles it in one sentence he wrote to a church that was doing the same arithmetic.

God gave the increase

I have to be careful here, because there is a version of this that sends her off to look. Find Sadie. Message her. Get closure. I am not going to say it, and not because it would be dangerous, but because it puts the weight of her own peace on a stranger's willingness to reply, and it makes the report the point, and the report was never the point.

Paul is writing to a church that has organized itself into fan clubs, and he takes the whole thing apart with an agricultural sentence. I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6).

Three verbs and they are not equal. Planting is visible: you can watch a person do it, and it takes about nine seconds on a wall outside a music block. Watering is visible too. Increase is not. Nobody has ever seen a thing grow. You see it later, having grown, and only if you are standing there, and she was not standing there and never will be.

You have done the visible part, and the invisible part was never assigned to you. That is not me softening Paul's meaning; 1 Corinthians 3:6 gives the increase to God in the same breath as it gives the planting to a man, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that verse divided the labor on purpose.

Then Paul says it again, harder: So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase (1 Corinthians 3:7). Not anything. That sounds brutal until you are the one who has been carrying the increase for fourteen years, and then it is the kindest sentence in the letter.

I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.1 Corinthians 3:6-7

One case is not a law

Now the thing that has actually been happening since she was twenty two.

She has a sample size of one, with no follow up, and out of it she has constructed a general principle about her own effect on the world. Anybody would spot the flaw in that if it were somebody else's reasoning. It has never once been examined because it has never been said out loud.

You have been living under a law built from one case with no result available. Proverbs 18:17 says he that is first in his own cause seems just until his neighbor comes and searches him, and a conclusion reached alone at twenty two never had a neighbor; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) has been in the room for every unreported thing you have said.

This is yours right now, with a plastic cup in your hand: an effect on other people that you are not the auditor of. 2 Corinthians 3:2 says you are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men, and a letter does not get to read itself; the Spirit does the writing, and He writes it in somebody else's chest.

Why the not knowing is the design

Let me say something about the silence, because it is not an accident and it is not a punishment.

Jesus says, when you do something good, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, and that your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly (Matthew 6:3-4). Read what He is protecting. He is not protecting the recipient. He is protecting the giver from needing the report.

A person who gets a receipt for every good thing they do starts doing it for the receipt, and eventually cannot tell the difference. The silence is a mercy, and it is expensive, and it is a mercy.

You were kept from a receipt so the thing would stay clean. Matthew 6:4 says your Father sees in secret, and the seeing is His and the secret is deliberate; the Holy Spirit who carried that into the Gospel put the not knowing inside the instruction rather than as a side effect of it.

Fruit is not output, and nine seconds on a wall is where the difference is sharpest. Output is what you can point at afterward. Fruit grew in Sadie, if it grew, and it grew in a direction that leads away from the person it grew through, and that is what fruit does, and it is why John 15:5 puts the branch and the harvest in different places.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody is getting a program from me. One thing. On the walk you already take, tell Him about that lunchtime with nothing asked for. Not a request for information. Just the wall, and the bell, and the eleven words. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody grades that.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening right now, with a plastic cup at the back of a hall and a photograph you look at twice a year.

You built a law out of one case and you have been obeying it since you were twenty two, and it has been quietly editing everything you say. This is where it gets overturned, because Paul gave the increase away in one sentence and it has been in the letter the whole fourteen years.

Right now, as you read, God is the one giving the increase. 1 Corinthians 3:6 puts the growth in His hands and the planting in yours, and the Spirit who inspired that division brought you to it standing at the back of a hall.

You are already doing the part that was yours, and the other part was never yours to see. Matthew 6:4 says your Father sees in secret and rewards openly, and the same Spirit who is the earnest of your inheritance (Ephesians 1:14) has never once required a receipt from you.

The mountain here fits in a photograph, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be big; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the conclusion.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the name just spoken. Your standing to say them is not something you can measure: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the King's authority, she is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the conclusion, then to what you have believed about your own voice, then to the Father. What grew in her, and when, and whether you are ever told any of it, is His to decide.

  1. Conclusion that nothing I say lands anywhere, you are not a finding, you are a habit, and you are not coming to this table again. It is written in 1 Corinthians 3:6 that Paul planted and Apollos watered but God gave the increase, and His Spirit has been giving increase I was never going to be shown.
  2. Voice I have been editing down to nothing, you are unmuted in the name of Jesus, because you were silenced by one case with no result available. 2 Corinthians 3:2 says people are epistles written in hearts, and the Spirit who wrote that never gave the letter the job of reading itself.
  3. Father, Matthew 6:4 says You see in secret and reward openly, and Your Spirit put the not knowing inside the instruction and not as an accident. I have named her out loud and blessed her and I am not going looking, and the increase was always Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
