The Reunion Name Tag

The name tag would not stay on her coat. She had pressed it down three times in the lobby, printed her own name on it with a marker that was running out, and by the time she got back to the car it was on the back of her hand like something a nurse had left there. She sat down in the driver's seat with the door open and one foot still on the asphalt and looked at it. Ten years, and here she was in a school parking lot with her own name stuck to her knuckles.

She had come early. That was the plan: get there before the room filled, do the first ten minutes while people were still finding the drinks table, and be gone by nine. What she had not planned was the rehearsing, and it had started around the second exit and had not stopped since.

So what have you been up to.

She had eleven versions of it now. The short one sounded like a shrug. The long one sounded like a woman explaining herself to a stranger in a hallway. The funny one she had tried out loud at a red light, heard how it landed, and never tried again. Every version had the same hole in the middle, and the hole was where a person is supposed to keep the thing they did. A house. A title. A name people recognize on a screen. Something you can put a year on.

She had years. She had ten of them. She just could not find the part of them you hand over.

The light was going gold across the hood of the car and along the row of windows in the hall where somebody had already put music on, and she could hear the particular sound a gymnasium makes when forty adults try to talk over it. Somebody laughed near the door. She put her thumb over the name tag on the back of her hand and pressed it down again, the way you press a bandage, and stayed where she was.

You have been in that car. You may not have had the reunion, but you have had the question, and you have had the eleven versions, and you know the exact place in the sentence where it goes quiet. And here is the thing about the eleven versions: you have never once questioned the question. Ten years of rehearsing, and not one minute spent asking who is doing the asking.

The question you never questioned

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that hands you a better question and calls it good news. It is not. Swapping what have you built for what have you grown is the same interrogation in a nicer voice, and it grades the same person in the same chair. So let us take the question away instead of improving it.

Paul writes that we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10). Read the order of that, because the order is the whole thing. The workmanship comes first. The works come second, and they were prepared beforehand by somebody else, and the only verb left for you in the sentence is walk. Not produce. Not generate. Not show. Walk in what was already laid out.

You are His workmanship, and that was finished before the decade you cannot account for even started. I am not making that softer than it is written; Ephesians 2:10 says workmanship, and the Greek behind it is the word we get poem from, a made thing, a piece of work that the maker signs. And it is His Spirit, not this sentence, that carries it into you while you sit there with a name tag on your hand.

Then look at the two verses just above it, because Paul has just spent them dismantling exactly the thing you were rehearsing. By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Not of works. He says it flatly, and then he immediately says workmanship, and the two sit next to each other on purpose. You are not the works. You are the work.

What a made thing is worth

Here is where the ledger in your head actually breaks down, and it is worth seeing it break rather than being told it is broken.

A made thing is not valued by what it produces. It is valued by who made it and what they made it for. Nobody stands in a gallery asking what a painting has generated this quarter. That is not merely rude; it is a category error, and everyone in the room knows it. The painting's worth is the maker's, given at the making, and it does not move when the room empties.

You have already been made, and the making was not on your side of the ledger. That is not a compliment I am paying you. Psalm 139:14 says you are fearfully and wonderfully made, and verse 16 says His book had your days written in it before there were any of them, and the Spirit who breathed that psalm did not add a clause about output. The days were written first. The living came after.

And this is the part the eleven rehearsed answers keep out of the car with you. This is yours right now, before you walk in that door: a worth that nobody in that gymnasium is able to raise, and that nobody in it is able to lower. Scripture settles it in Romans 8:38-39, where nothing in life, nothing in death, nothing present and nothing to come can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Nothing to come includes tonight. And the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a felt thing rather than a fact you have heard.

Fruit is not output, and this is where the difference stops being a word game. Output is what you made and can display. Fruit is what grew on you while you were attached, and most of it grew in the direction of other people and you were never shown it. The woman in the car has ten years of it and no way to see any of it, and the two facts are not in tension. They almost never are.

The measure is the thing that is wrong

I said I would not hand you a better ruler. I want to go further than that: the ruler itself is the injury.

Every version she rehearsed assumed a scale, and assumed she was on it, and assumed the only open question was where. That is what ten years of practicing does. It does not merely fail to answer the question; it teaches the heart that the question is legitimate, and that the shame at the hole in the middle of the sentence is deserved.

It is not deserved and it never was. You were carried on His terms from the beginning, and no scale in that room was ever consulted. I am not speaking my own kindness over you. Isaiah 46:4 has God saying He carries, He bears, He delivers, and He says it about gray hairs, which means He is describing a whole life and not a good stretch of one. The Spirit who said that is the same Spirit at work in you now, and He has never once weighed you the way you have been weighing yourself.

Right now, as you read, the Father is not reviewing your decade. Hebrews 4:13 says all things are naked and open before Him, so this is not a God who has missed anything; He has read the ten years in full, including the parts you would not put in any of the eleven versions. And His Spirit brought you to this page anyway, which is not the behavior of an examiner.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since I promised you no program and I mean it. One thing. On the drive you already take, or in the two minutes the kettle already takes, talk to Him about something from those ten years that has no result attached to it at all. A morning. A person. A thing you noticed. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody grades that, and none of it goes in an answer.
