The Ledger Under the Counter

This message is for a man of forty five clearing out his father's spice shop the month after the funeral, holding a ledger in which every day of thirty years is totaled at the foot of the page, and unable to find anything in his own life that would total to a figure

His father kept the ledger under the counter, on the shelf where the paper bags went, and every night for thirty years he wrote the day into it and drew a line and totaled it. Cumin. Cardamom. Dried figs by weight. Somebody's account settled, somebody's account carried. Then the line, then the figure, then the book shut and back on the shelf under the bags.

He is forty five and the shop has been closed a month and he is here to empty it, and the ledger is the last thing on the shelf. He puts it on the counter next to the brass scale. It opens where it always opened. Thursday. A date in March. Eleven entries, and the line under them, and the total in his father's small careful hand.

He sits down on the stool behind the counter, which he has not done since he was nineteen, and he turns pages. There is a whole life in there and every day of it comes to a figure. Some of the figures are terrible. There is a stretch one winter where the totals go down and down and then flatten out at nothing for eleven days running, and his father wrote the nothing in anyway, and drew the line under it anyway, because that is what the book was for.

And then, sitting on a stool in a shop that smells like his childhood, he does the thing he has been doing since the funeral without ever once meaning to. He starts looking for his own line. Forty five years. Where is the page, and where is the figure at the foot of it, and what does it say. He works at a desk. He has been useful. He has been steady. And there is nothing he could carry to that counter and set down and have somebody rule a line under and total, and he sits there with his father's book open in front of him and cannot find one page in his own life that comes to anything.

The light through the half shutter has gone the color of the cumin sacks. Somewhere down the row a man is closing a grille. He turns another page of a book that is not his and reads a total that is not his and feels the old sum starting up again in his chest, and he does not know how to stop it, because he never learned that there was a way.

You know that sum. You may not have the shop, but you have the book, and you have opened it and gone down the column and come to the foot of the page and found nothing you would call a figure. And the sum has never been the problem. The problem is that you have appointed yourself the accountant, and Scripture will not confirm you in the post.

The seat you appointed yourself to

I want to be careful, because there is a version of this that hands you a better column and calls it comfort. It is not comfort. Ruling a new line and writing fruit at the top of it instead of profit is the same book with a new heading, and it totals the same man short. So I am not going to give you a better column. I am going to take the pen.

Paul says something in Corinthians that people quote at each other and almost never turn on themselves. Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts (1 Corinthians 4:5). Before the time. The accounts are open. The line has not been drawn. Nobody has totaled anything, and the one man in the world who has no standing whatsoever to total your life is you, and you have been doing it nightly on a stool for years.

You have a verdict that has not been read yet, and it is not the one you have been reading over yourself in the dark. That is not my opinion of you; 1 Corinthians 4:3 has Paul saying that he does not even judge himself, and the Spirit who carried that line into the text is the one pressing it into you now, on a stool, in a shop, with the wrong book open.

And then look at how the verse ends, because the end of it is the part nobody quotes. And then shall every man have praise of God. Every man. Not the ones with a figure at the foot of the page. It is not a competition with a short list at the end of it. It is praise from God, and the text puts it in the plural and leaves nobody out of it.

Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.1 Corinthians 4:5

Hidden things, brought to light

Here is what that phrase actually promises, and it is not what a frightened man hears in it.

Hidden things of darkness sounds like exposure. Read the second half of the sentence and it turns into something else entirely: the counsels of the hearts made manifest, and then praise. What is hidden is not only the failure. What is hidden is the whole of what a life actually was, the parts nobody wrote down, the parts you did not know were happening, the eleven days at nothing that your father wrote in anyway.

You are not the accountant of your own life, and the stool you have been sitting on was never yours to sit on. Scripture settles it in Romans 14:4, where the question is put plainly: who are you to judge another man's servant, and to his own master he stands or falls. That includes when the servant and the judge are the same man, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a relief instead of a technicality.

This is yours already, without one entry in the book: praise of God, named in the text, promised to every man in it. I am not softening the verse to be kind to you. 1 Corinthians 4:5 says every, and it says praise, and the Spirit who breathed it did not attach a schedule of achievements to it.

Fruit is not output, and the shop is where you can see the difference. Output is what goes in the ledger: weighed, dated, totaled, shut in a book on a shelf. Fruit is what grew on the man while he stood there weighing, and it grew in the direction of the people who came in, and it was never once weighed by anybody. Thirty years of it. Not one line.

The eleven days at nothing

I want to stay a moment with the winter where the totals went flat.

His father wrote the nothing in. That is the thing to see. He did not skip the page, he did not close the book for eleven days, he did not wait until there was a figure worth entering. He came in, he opened the book, he wrote nothing, and he drew the line, and he went home.

That is what a life attached to God looks like from the outside on the bad stretch, and it does not look like anything. You were seen through every one of those days, and being seen has never depended on there being a figure. Psalm 139:12 says the darkness and the light are both alike to Him, so there is no stretch of your years He was squinting at, and the Spirit who inspired that psalm was present in the flat weeks the same way He is present now.

It is already settled that the growing is His and not yours. Paul says it as flatly as it can be said in 1 Corinthians 3:7: neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who gives the growth. Not anything. The branch does not produce; it stays attached and something appears on it that it did not make. And the Spirit is the sap moving in it, today, whether or not the man on the stool can feel a thing.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since I promised you no program and I meant it. One thing. Over the coffee you already make, tell Him about one day from your own years that has no figure attached to it at all. A morning. A person who came in. Something you noticed and never mentioned. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody rules a line under that.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening right now, on the stool, with the wrong book open and the light gone the color of the sacks.

The sum has started again, the way it always does when you stop moving. And this time it is not going to finish, because the man doing the adding is standing up.

Right now, as you read, God is not totalling you. 1 Corinthians 4:5 says judge nothing before the time, and He keeps His own rule better than you have kept it; the accounts are open, the line is not drawn, and the Spirit who brought you to this page is not holding a pen over your years.

You are His before you are anything's total, and that was true on the eleven days at nothing. Scripture puts it beyond appeal in 1 John 3:1, where we are called the children of God, and it says that is what we are, present tense, not what we will be if the figures come good. And the same Spirit who bears witness with our spirit that we are His is doing it in this shop, tonight, over a book that belongs to a dead man.

The mountain here is small enough to write on the back of a receipt, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be large; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the book.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the crossed out receipt in your hand. Your standing to say them is not something you produced: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the right to speak for the King, he is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the book, then to the thing you have concluded about yourself from it, then to the Father. What grows on you after tonight, and when, and whether you are ever shown it, is His to decide.

  1. Ledger under the counter, you were never the record of my life, and I am closing you tonight. It is written in 1 Corinthians 4:5 that nothing is to be judged before the time, and the Spirit who carried that sentence to me will not let me sit in a seat God has not vacated.
  2. Verdict I reached about myself on a stool, you are overruled in the name of Jesus, because you were read out of a book that was never mine. Romans 14:4 says the servant stands or falls to his own master, and the Spirit who wrote that gave the ruling to Him and not to me.
  3. Father, You say in 1 Corinthians 4:5 that every man will have praise of You, and Your Spirit is saying every over a man with nothing at the foot of the page. I am shutting the book and putting the kettle on, and the years are Yours, and the growing was always Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
