Standing Out in the Yard

This message is for a man of forty two standing in his own driveway with a party going on behind the lit windows, doing what the elder brother did in the field: totalling the years he has served and finding the total has bought him nothing he can feel

He came out for a reason. There is always a reason, and his was that somebody had parked him in and he was going to move the car, which took forty seconds, and that was eleven minutes ago.

Now he is just standing in his own driveway with the keys in his hand. The windows are lit and the music is going and somebody has put the good speaker on, and every so often the whole room laughs at once and you can hear it out here as one sound.

He is not angry. He would like it to be anger, because anger has a shape and you can do something with it. What it actually is, is arithmetic. He has been doing it since about eight o'clock and he cannot get it to stop.

Sixteen years at the same place. Every shift covered, including the ones nobody asked him to cover. Twelve years running the accounts for the softball league that nobody else would do. His mother's house, all of it, for four years, on his own, and his sister flew in twice. He has a spreadsheet in his head with all of it in it, and he has been going down the column all evening, and the total keeps coming out the same, and the total is: this has bought me nothing.

Not nothing in the world. He has a house. He means something else and he would not be able to say it in front of anybody. He means it has bought him nothing he can feel. No warmth in his own chest when he walks into that room. No sense that he is loved rather than relied on. He has served for sixteen years and he is standing in his own driveway at half past eight because he does not know how to walk back in and be a person at a party rather than the man who moved the car.

There is a man in the Gospels standing exactly here, in a field, at night, refusing to go in, and everybody remembers his brother.

You have stood in that yard. And the total has never been the problem. The problem is that you are keeping a book that the Father of the house has never once asked to see, and you have been reading it out to yourself in the dark for years.

The book nobody asked for

I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that hands a tired man a better column and calls it grace. It is not grace. Telling him to count what grew instead of what he did leaves him in the driveway with a calculator, and the calculator is the injury. So I am not reformatting the book. I am reading you what the Father says when the book gets opened.

The elder brother in Luke 15 comes in from the field, hears music, finds out what has happened, and will not go in. His father comes out. That is the first thing and people go past it: the father leaves his own party and comes out into the dark for a man who is refusing him in front of the neighbors.

And then the brother reads out the book. All these years I have served you, he says, and never once went against a thing you said, and you never gave me so much as a young goat to have a party with my friends (Luke 15:29). Sixteen years. Every shift. Never one goat. It is the most honest sentence in the parable and it is the sentence a man says in a driveway all evening.

The father does not argue with the arithmetic. He does not say you have not served, and he does not say you have not been overlooked. He says one thing. Son, you are ever with me, and all that I have is yours (Luke 15:31).

You are being spoken to out here, and the sentence being spoken is son. That is not a warm reading of the text; Luke 15:31 has the father say son first, before anything else in the sentence, and the Holy Spirit who preserved that exchange is the one bringing it out to a driveway at half past eight.

And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.Luke 15:31

Ever with me, and all that I have

Two claims in one line, and both of them dismantle the spreadsheet without ever disputing a figure in it.

Ever with me. Not since you started performing. Not on the good years. Ever, which means the whole sixteen and the four with his mother and the twelve with the league and also the years before any of it, when he had not covered a single shift. The nearness was never bought, so no total was ever going to buy it.

All that I have is yours. Present tense. Already. The thing he was serving toward was the thing he already had, and he has been working sixteen years to earn an inheritance that was in his name the entire time.

This is yours right now, standing on your own gravel: everything the Father has, held in your name and not on account. Romans 8:17 says if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, and the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God (Romans 8:16), which is the Holy Spirit doing in a driveway exactly what the father did in a field.

Now let me name the sentence underneath the total, because it is not resentment about a goat. It sounds like this: I am wanted for what I carry, and if I ever stopped carrying it, I would find out what I am actually worth to these people. That is the fear, and it is the reason he came out for forty seconds and stayed eleven minutes, and he has never said it to a living soul.

You were never wanted for the carrying, and the Father came out into the dark to say so. Luke 15:20 has the same father running down a road for the other son, and Luke 15:28 has him coming out for this one; the Spirit who put both trips in one chapter did it so that no reader could conclude the Father only comes out for one kind of failure.

What sixteen years actually grew

Here is the part the spreadsheet has no column for.

Every entry in that book is output: shifts, accounts, four years of care. All of it real, all of it costly, and none of it the thing that has actually been happening. What has been happening is that a man has been becoming somebody who covers shifts nobody asked him to cover, and that is not on the list, because you cannot enter a person in a column.

It is already yours, and it grew while you were not looking at it. Galatians 5:22 names what the Spirit grows, and longsuffering and gentleness and goodness are not achievements, they are what appears on a branch that stays attached; the Holy Spirit grew those through sixteen years the man has written down as unpaid.

So what does staying attached look like this week, since nobody gets a program from me. One thing. On the drive you already take, or in the two minutes the car takes to warm up, tell Him about one shift you covered that nobody knew about and that produced nothing you could enter anywhere. Then be quiet long enough for Him to have the last word. Nobody totals that.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening right now, in the driveway, with the keys in your hand and the room laughing all at once behind you.

The total has come out again, the way it does every time you stop moving. And this time it is not going to stand, because the Father has already come out here and He is not going to argue about the figures.

Right now, as you read, the Father is saying son over a man in the dark. Luke 15:31 puts son at the front of the sentence, before ever with me, before all that I have, and the Spirit who kept that word in the text is speaking it over this driveway tonight.

You have everything already, and no number of covered shifts was ever going to add to it. Ephesians 1:3 says He has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, past tense, all, and the same Spirit who is the earnest of that inheritance (Ephesians 1:14) is standing out here with you.

The mountain here is small enough to write on the back of a parking stub, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be large; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the total.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the stub crossed out on the wall. Your standing to say them is not something you earned by service: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an heir does not qualify for an inheritance, he is born into it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the total, then to the fear you have never said out loud, then to the Father. What grows on you after tonight, and when, and whether you are ever shown it, is His to decide.

  1. Total I have kept since I was nineteen, you do not buy anything, and I am putting you down in this driveway. It is written in Luke 15:31 that the Father says son, you are ever with me, and His Spirit has been saying ever over a man out in the dark doing sums.
  2. Fear that I am only wanted for what I carry, get out of this yard in the name of Jesus, because the Father came out here Himself and He did not come for the carrying. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit bears witness that I am His child, and a child is not a supplier.
  3. Father, Ephesians 1:3 says You have already blessed me with every spiritual blessing in Christ, and Your Spirit is saying already over a man who has been trying to buy it by the shift. I am going back in there to be at the party and not to run it, and all that You have is mine.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
