The cupboard is in the study and it goes floor to ceiling and it has been closed since about March.
He opened it tonight because a shelf had given way inside, quietly, some time ago, and a box had slid, and there was a smell.
Here is what was in there. Four ring binders of notes from a course he did in two thousand and nineteen. A box of index cards, alphabetical, on a subject he no longer thinks about. Two folders of talks he wrote and has never given, in plastic sleeves, with the dates on the front. A shoebox of receipts he was keeping in case. Three unopened packs of the pens he likes, bought when he heard they were discontinuing them. A grocery sack of dried goods from four years ago, which is where the smell was coming from, and which has quietly gone over in the dark.
He is forty one. He is sitting on the floor of his own study with a bag of ruined food in his hand and the light going gold across the carpet, and he is not thinking about the food.
He is thinking that everything in this cupboard is the same thing.
Notes he will not read. Talks he will not give. Cards on a subject he left. Pens for a shortage that never came. Every single item is a portion of something good that arrived at the right time and that he did not use at the right time, because he was keeping it, because he has always kept things, because somewhere in him there is a conviction he has never examined that says: what comes to you might not come again, so hold it.
And it has all gone over in the dark. Not just the food. He can see it now, sitting on the carpet. Notes go stale. Talks go stale. A pen dries up in the packet.
The window is doing the thing it does at this time of year where the light comes in low and lands on the wall behind the desk, and the room smells wrong, and he is sitting among his own boxes.
You have that cupboard. It may not be in a study. It might be in a phone, in a folder of things you saved to read, in savings you cannot spend, in a plan you are holding back for later. And the wanting to keep things is not a character defect and it is not greed. It is fear, and there is a chapter in Exodus where God set up an arrangement that goes directly at it.
A certain rate every day
I have to be careful here, because there is a version of this that hands an organized man a better rhythm and calls it discipleship. It is not discipleship. A weekly review, a system for what to keep, a rule about how long to hold a thing, is one more container, and the cupboard will simply be tidier. So there is no rhythm coming out of this.
In Exodus 16 God tells Moses that He will rain bread from heaven, and then adds the condition that runs the whole arrangement: that the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day (Exodus 16:4). A certain rate. Every day. Enough, and today.
Then verse 20 records what happened when some of them did what any sensible person would do, which is keep a bit back. Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank (Exodus 16:20).
That is the detail worth sitting with on a carpet. The bread was real. It was genuinely from God. It fed them the day it came. And held overnight against tomorrow, the exact same substance went over.
You have been given today's portion every day of your life, and it was never issued in a form that stores. That is not a metaphor I am laying on the text; Exodus 16:4 says a certain rate every day and Exodus 16:20 says what happened to the kept portion, and the Holy Spirit who preserved both verses put the arrangement and its failure in the same chapter.
And notice one more thing, because it is the part that undoes the fear rather than scolding it. The next morning, it came again. Every morning for forty years, it came again. The arrangement was not stingy. It was daily.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day.Exodus 16:4
Abiding cannot be stored
Now John 15, because it is the ground under everything here.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me (John 15:4). A branch has no reserves. It does not hold sap back for a hard week. It is attached, and what it needs comes up when it needs it, and what appears on it it did not make.
Which is why a cupboard of good things has not made him more secure, and why it was never going to, and why the failure is not a failure of his organization.
You have been supplied continuously through years you spent trying to build a store. John 15:4 makes abiding a live connection rather than a stock, and the Spirit is the sap; a branch is not safer for having filled a shelf.
And that is the guardrail, said straight: a man who hoards is not a man who lacks faith in some measurable sense that could be graded. He is a man who has never been convinced at the level where it counts that tomorrow's portion will come, and those are different sentences and only one of them can be said kindly.
This is yours right now, sitting on a carpet in a room that smells wrong: a supply that arrives rather than a store that depletes. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning, and new every morning is an arrangement and not a slogan; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) has been delivering daily into a house full of boxes.
What the keeping is protecting
Let me name the conviction under the cupboard, because it is not thrift and it is not laziness about sorting.
It sounds like this: what comes to me might not come again, so I had better hold it. That is the sentence. It has never been examined, it was formed a long time before two thousand and nineteen, and it has furnished an entire room.
You were never in a house where the supply was going to stop. Philippians 4:19 says God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus, and the measure named there is His riches rather than your reserves; the Holy Spirit who carried that into the letter did not add a clause about keeping some back.
Fruit is not output, and this cupboard is a good place to see the difference. Output is what is in the boxes: notes, talks, cards, sleeves, dates on the front. Fruit is what grew on a man who spent four years learning things carefully because he wanted to be useful to people, and Galatians 5:22 calls part of that goodness, and it did not go in a binder and it has not gone over in the dark.
So here is what is happening right now, on the carpet, with the doors open and the light on the wall behind the desk.
You are sitting in the middle of a decade of keeping, and you have started to read it as evidence about your character. This is where that stops, because the arrangement was set a long time before you, and it is daily, and it has never once failed to arrive.
Right now, as you read, today's portion has already been given. Exodus 16:4 calls it a certain rate every day, and the certainty in that phrase is God's and not the gatherer's; the Spirit who preserved that chapter brought you to a cupboard tonight to read it.
It is already yours, and it did not come in a form that could be hoarded. Lamentations 3:23 says His compassions are new every morning and great is His faithfulness, and the same Spirit who is the earnest of your inheritance (Ephesians 1:14) delivers on that schedule and not on yours.
The mountain here is small enough to fit on a shelf, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be big; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the cupboard.
Declare this over yourself
Say these on the floor with the doors still open. Your standing to say them is not something you stored: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the King's authority, he is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the cupboard, then to the conviction you have never examined, then to the Father. What grows on you after tonight, and when, and whether you can see it, is His to decide.
- Cupboard I have been filling for years, you are not my security and you never were the arrangement, and you are being opened tonight. It is written in Exodus 16:4 that God gave a certain rate every day, and His Spirit has been giving me today's portion the entire time I was hoarding.
- Conviction that it will not come again, get out of this room in the name of Jesus, because you furnished it before I was old enough to question you. Philippians 4:19 says God supplies all my need according to His riches, and the Spirit who wrote that named His riches and not my shelves.
- Father, Lamentations 3:23 says Your mercies are new every morning, and Your Spirit has been delivering daily into a house full of boxes. I am taking ten minutes this week and keeping none of it, and the growing was always Yours.
