The ring is heavy. That is not a figure of speech, it is an actual complaint about her coat pocket. There are four sets on it and a fob and a little brass thing shaped like a fish that somebody gave her in two thousand and six.
The hall. The unit behind the hall where the chairs live. The house on the corner that the church rents out and that somebody has to let the plumber into. And the school, because of Wednesdays.
She is forty nine. She woke up on her own couch at four in the morning with her coat still on and one shoe off, and the television doing that menu screen thing, and she lay there for a while working out what day it was.
And then she got up and put the kettle on and stood in her own kitchen at ten past four holding the ring in her hand.
Here is what she was trying to work out, and it is not what people assume. She was not trying to work out how to do less. She has heard that speech. Somebody gave it to her in the parking lot in September and she nodded all the way through it and went back in and opened the hall on Thursday.
What she was trying to work out at ten past four was a question that has no obvious answer and that she has not asked anybody, which is: how do you tell the difference. Between serving and straining. From the inside. Because from the inside they feel exactly the same. Both of them get you up. Both of them make you keep going when you are tired. Both of them look, from the outside, like a faithful woman with four sets of keys.
She stood there in the kitchen with the kettle going and could not tell. Not about the hall, not about the school, not about any of it. And it frightened her more than being tired had ever frightened her, because if you cannot tell, you cannot fix it, and she is a woman who fixes things.
The window over the sink was black. The kettle got to the top of its noise and clicked off and she did not make anything.
You have stood in that kitchen. Maybe not with keys. But you have had the moment where you could not tell any more, from the inside, whether the thing you are doing for God is being done out of Him or out of you. And that question does not get answered by doing less. It gets answered by a sentence spoken to a builder who was staring at a job much too big for him.
Not by might, and it was said to a builder
I have to be careful here, because there is a version of this that hands a tired woman a delegation plan and calls it wisdom. It is not wisdom, and it is not what she asked for at ten past four. She asked how to tell the difference. So there is no plan coming out of this, and there is not going to be one.
Zechariah is given a word for Zerubbabel, who is trying to rebuild a temple with almost nothing, surrounded by people telling him it cannot be done. And the word is not a strategy and it is not encouragement about his own capacity. It is this: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts (Zechariah 4:6).
Might is the word for an army. Power is the word for personal strength. Both are taken off the table in one sentence, and what is put in their place is not a better method. It is a Person.
You are being carried by the Spirit through work you thought you were carrying. That is not comfort I invented for a tired woman; Zechariah 4:6 puts the whole rebuild on the Spirit of the Lord of hosts, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that line has been the one holding up four buildings that a set of keys was only ever opening the doors of.
And here is where it answers her actual question, which nobody ever notices about this verse. She asked how to tell serving from straining from the inside. Zechariah 4:6 does not give her a feeling to check for. It tells her whose strength the thing is running on, which is a fact and not a mood, and it was already true at four in the morning on a couch with her coat on.
Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.Zechariah 4:6
Abiding is not another job on the ring
Now John 15, because it is the ground this whole site stands on.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me (John 15:4). A branch has no work rate. It does not open anything, it does not lock anything, and it is not on any list. It is attached, and sap comes up, and something appears on it that it did not make.
Which means abiding is not the fifth set of keys. It is not one more thing she has to get to. It is the condition she is in while she does everything else, including Wednesdays.
You have been attached through every one of those buildings, including the nights you fell asleep in your coat. John 15:4 makes abiding a place rather than a performance, and the Spirit is the sap; a woman is not more attached on the weeks she gets to bed.
And that is the guardrail, said plainly: a woman who cannot tell serving from straining is not a woman who has left God. She is a woman who has not been still long enough for anything to be distinguishable, and those are entirely different diagnoses.
This is yours already, whether or not you can feel the difference: a nearness that was never running on your strength. Colossians 3:3 says your life is hidden with Christ in God, and hidden is a thing done to you and kept by Him; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) was on the couch at four in the morning.
What the ring is really for
Let me name the sentence under the keys, because it is not duty and it is not people pleasing.
It sounds like this: if the buildings do not need me, I am not sure where I sit in any of this, and I would rather be exhausted than find that out. That is the fear. It is why the speech in the parking lot slid off. And it has never been said out loud, not to the woman who gave the speech, not to anybody.
You were given a place before you were given a key. Ephesians 2:19 says you are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God, and household is a word about belonging and not about function; the Holy Spirit who carried that into the letter did not make citizenship conditional on Wednesdays.
Fruit is not output, and a ring of keys is a good place to see it. Output is the opening and the locking and the plumber let in and the chairs put out. Fruit is what has grown on a woman who does that for people who mostly do not know her name, and Galatians 5:22 calls that goodness and faithfulness, and neither of them is on any key.
So here is what is happening right now, in the kitchen, with the kettle clicked off and the window black.
You asked a question at ten past four and then you decided it was unanswerable, and you have been standing here since. This is where that stops, because the answer was given to a builder a long time ago and it is not a feeling.
Right now, as you read, it is not by might and not by power but by His Spirit. Zechariah 4:6 is a fact about whose strength the work runs on rather than a mood you have to locate, and the Spirit named in it has been holding four buildings up while a woman thought she was.
You have already been given a place that no key opens. Ephesians 2:19 says you are of the household of God, and household is not a duty roster; the same Spirit who is the earnest of that inheritance (Ephesians 1:14) does not check the ring in your coat pocket.
The mountain here is small enough to fit in a coat pocket, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be big; it has to be spoken (Matthew 17:20). So speak. Not to God first. To the ring.
Declare this over yourself
Say these in the kitchen with the keys on the counter. Your standing to say them is not something you unlocked: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and an ambassador does not earn the King's authority, she is handed it. Scripture is the ground and the Holy Spirit is the power, and the words are not doing the work, He is. Speak first to the ring, then to the fear you have never said out loud, then to the Father. What grows on you after this, and when, and whether you can feel the difference, is His to decide.
- Weight of four sets of keys, you are not what holds any of this up, and you are not going on my ring tomorrow. It is written in Zechariah 4:6 that it is not by might nor by power but by My Spirit, and that same Spirit has been carrying every building I thought I was carrying.
- Fear that the buildings are my place, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus, because you slid off a good speech in September and were never once made to answer for yourself. Ephesians 2:19 says I am of the household of God, and the Spirit who wrote that gave me a place and not a post.
- Father, Zechariah 4:6 was spoken to a man staring at a job far too big for him, and Your Spirit is speaking it over a woman who fell asleep in her coat. I am going to sit in that dark hall for ten minutes this week and open nothing, and the growing was always Yours.
