The Streak I Broke at Four Hundred Days

Four hundred and six.

The number lived in the top corner with a little flame next to it, and she is aware of how that sounds, and she would like it on the record that she did not start out caring about it. It was a thing the app did. She noticed it around day forty and thought it was silly. She checked it every morning from about day ninety.

She read the passage the app gave her. She read the little note underneath it. She tapped the thing at the bottom that made the number go up. Four hundred and six times.

Here is the part she has not said to anybody, including the two people she would normally say everything to. She cannot remember a single one of them.

Not one. Not one morning in four hundred and six where anything happened. Not a phrase that stayed with her into the day, not a moment where the room changed, not once where she put the phone down and felt she had been anywhere near God. She has been present for every one. She has been faithful, if that is the word, and she is not sure it is.

So on a Tuesday in March, at seven in the morning, sitting on the end of her bed with the phone in her hand, she did not open it.

She sat there and let the day go past and did not open it, and it was one of the more frightening things she has done as an adult, and she could not have explained to anybody why she was doing it. The nearest she could get, later, was: I wanted to find out if anything was actually there, or if it was just the number.

Nothing happened. That is the honest report from the far side. The world did not tilt. She did not feel abandoned and she did not feel free. She felt exactly the same as she had on day four hundred and five, which is the piece of information she was actually afraid of, and it took her about a week to work out why.

The curtains were open and the sun came all the way across the floor the way it does in that room in March and she sat on the end of the bed with a phone she had not opened and thought: so what was I doing.

You have kept a streak. It might not have had a flame on it. It might have been a chair you sit in, a chapter a day, a service you have not missed. And the question is not whether you should have kept it. The question is what you thought it was holding up, and a sentence in John 15 answers that in a way that will either offend you or set you down.

Continue in a love that was already there

I have to be careful here, because there is a version of this that hands her a better devotional habit and calls it depth. It is not depth. Swapping the app for a paper journal produces a different number in a different place, and she will be sitting on the end of a bed in eighteen months with the same question. So there is no habit coming out of this.

In John 15 Jesus says: As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love (John 15:9).

Look at the order. The loving is finished before the instruction arrives. It is described in the perfect: the Father has loved the Son, the Son has loved them, and only then comes the imperative, and the imperative is not produce it, or maintain it, or earn it. It is continue in it. Stay where you already are.

You are inside a love that was completed before you were asked to do anything with it. That is not me making a hard verse gentle; John 15:9 puts the two loves in the past tense and the staying in the present, and the Holy Spirit who carried that sentence into the Gospel put them in that order on purpose.

And notice what continue does not mean. It does not mean feel. There is no instruction anywhere in that chapter to generate a sensation, and there is no test in it that a person could fail on a morning when nothing happens.

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.John 15:9

Abiding is not a streak

Now the verses just before it, because they are the whole architecture of this site and they were written for exactly this Tuesday.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me (John 15:4). A branch does not have a count. There is no day four hundred and six for a branch. It is attached, and sap moves, and something appears on it that it did not make and did not feel arriving.

Which means the number was never measuring the thing she thought it was measuring. It was measuring taps.

You have been attached through four hundred and six mornings you cannot remember. John 15:4 makes abiding a state rather than a streak, and the Spirit is the sap; a branch is not more attached on a morning when it can feel something moving.

And that is the guardrail on this one, said as plainly as it can be said: feeling nothing on four hundred and six mornings is not evidence of distance. Sap is not a sensation. A tree in February is not detached, and nobody who has ever grown anything would say that it was.

This is yours right now, on the end of an unmade bed: a place in Him that no number was holding up and no broken number can bring down. Romans 8:38 says nothing in life or death or things present or things to come can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus, and things present includes a Tuesday in March; the same Spirit who bears witness that you are His (Romans 8:16) was in that room while the phone stayed shut.

What she was actually afraid of

Let me name the thing under the experiment, because it was not laziness and it was not doubt in the way people mean it.

It sounds like this: I think I might have been the only one in the room this whole time, and I would rather keep tapping than find that out. That is the fear, and it is precise, and it is why breaking a streak felt like something enormous rather than like skipping an app.

You were not alone in that room on one single one of those mornings. Matthew 28:20 has Jesus saying lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world, and always is a word that covers the mornings a person felt nothing at all; the Holy Spirit who carried that promise into the Gospel did not attach an experience clause to it.

Fruit is not output, and a phone is a good place to see the difference. Output is the number with the flame next to it. Fruit is what has grown on a woman who showed up for four hundred and six mornings with nothing coming back, and Galatians 5:22 calls that faithfulness, and it does not have a counter on it and could not have one.
