Past the Break, Sitting on the Board

Five twenty, and the app tells him the swell is one point two at eleven seconds and the wind is offshore until about eight, and he is in the water by five forty because he has done this two hundred and eleven mornings this year and he knows because it says so.

That is the thing. It says so.

There is a number for everything now. Sessions, minutes, waves caught, the little graph that goes across the week. He did not set out to do this. It happened the way it happens, which is that somebody shows you the app and it seems useful for about two months and then one morning you are lying in the dark at five past five doing arithmetic about a streak.

This morning it was flat. Properly flat, the sort of morning where a serious person goes home. He paddled out anyway, because you cannot log a morning you went home from, and got past the break, and sat up on the board.

And there was nothing. No sets, no wind, the water just doing the slow heavy thing it does, and the sky going from gray to that colorless color and then, quite suddenly, gold all the way along the headland.

And he did not know what to do with his hands.

That is the sentence he came in with. He sat out there for maybe twenty five minutes on a board with nothing to catch, which is a thing he used to do at seventeen for hours at a time and has not done once since he was about thirty, and he did not know what to do with his hands, and he checked the time twice, and the second time he actually said something out loud.

He is thirty eight. He has turned the ocean, which is the largest unmanageable thing he has ever been near, into a session. He knows that now. He knew it at about five past six with his legs in the water and the light coming along the headland the color of a struck match.

You have done this to something. Maybe not water. Maybe a walk, a Sunday, a book you loved before it had a page count on it, a thing that used to be yours and is now a thing you complete. And you know the exact feeling of sitting in the middle of it with nothing to record and not knowing what to do with your hands.

He said it while the work was unfinished

I have to be careful here, because there is a version of this that hands a tired man a rest practice and calls it health. It is not health. A ten minute stillness block with a timer on it is another session, and he will complete it two hundred and eleven times and be exactly where he started. So there is no practice coming out of this.

There is a moment in Mark 6 where the disciples come back from being sent out, and they are full of what happened, and the text says there were so many coming and going that they had no leisure so much as to eat. And Jesus says: Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while (Mark 6:31).

Look at when He says it. Not when the work is done. The crowd is still there. The need has not reduced by one person. He says it in the middle, which is the only place it ever gets said, because there is no other place available.

You are being told to come apart while the water is still there and the need has not moved. That is not me making the verse comfortable; Mark 6:31 has Jesus giving the instruction with the crowd in full view, and the Holy Spirit who preserved that detail put the crowd in the sentence on purpose.

And notice the two words He does not use. He does not say be efficient, and He does not say earn it. He says come apart, which is about location, and rest a while, which is about duration, and neither of those has a metric attached.

Abiding is not a session

Now John 15, which is the floor under this whole thing.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me (John 15:4). A branch does not have a personal best. There is no branch streak and no branch graph. It is attached, and sap comes up, and something appears on it that it did not make.

Which means twenty five minutes on flat water with nothing to catch was not a wasted morning and it was not a failed one either. Nothing was being scored out there, and nothing has been being scored for two hundred and eleven mornings.

You have been attached on every single one of those mornings, including the two hundred and eleventh. John 15:4 makes abiding a place a person is in rather than a streak a person keeps, and the Spirit is the sap; a branch is not more attached on a good swell.

And the guardrail, said straight: a man who has turned the ocean into a log is not a man who has drifted from God. He is a man who has not had an unmeasured hour since he was thirty, and those are two entirely different things to be told.

This is yours right now, sitting on a board with nothing coming: a place in Him no app has ever been able to see. Colossians 3:3 says your life is hidden with Christ in God, and hidden means it was never available for logging; the same Spirit who bears witness that you belong to God (Romans 8:16) was out past the break at ten past six this morning.

What the numbers are actually for

Let me say the thing underneath, because it is not vanity and it is not fitness.

It sounds like this: if I stop counting, I will not be able to prove that the morning happened, and if I cannot prove it, I am not sure it counts, and I am not sure I do. That is the sentence, and it is why he paddled out on a flat morning, and he has never said it to one of the people on that tailgate.

You were never required to produce evidence of your own mornings. Psalm 139:16 says God's book had all your days written in it before there was one of them, which means the record was made a long time before the app was, and the Holy Spirit who inspired that psalm does not need a screenshot.

Fruit is not output, and the water is a good place to see the difference. Output is the graph: sessions, minutes, the little bar for the week. Fruit is what has grown on a man who gets up at five for something that gives him nothing back, and Galatians 5:22 names that kind of thing joy and longsuffering, and neither of them appears on a screen at the end of a session.
